Deal Castle with Governor's Lodgings (1920s?)
Deal Castle with Governor's Lodgings (1920s?)
Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England. It is among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber,Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Most were built at great speed between 1539 and 1542 by order of King Henry VIII, who feared an invasion by the Catholic powers of Europe. Its squat, rounded turrets were designed to deflect incoming cannon balls, and acted as platforms from which to fire barrages from increasingly sophisticated artillery pieces. The fort guarded the sheltered anchorage of ‘the Downs’ – the stretch of water between the shore and the hazardous Goodwin Sands, a graveyard of ships. Today you can explore the whole of the castle from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. It is one of the most impressive of the Device Forts being built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 as an artillery fortress to counter the threat of invasion from Catholic France and Spain. It is shaped like a Tudor rose, being perfectly symmetrical, with a low, circular keep at its centre. Around the circumference of the keep are six bastions, with a further series of six bastions in the curtain wall, one of which serves as the gatehouse. All the outer walls of the castle and bastions are rounded to both provide strength and to deflect shot more efficiently than flat walls. Over 200 cannon and gun ports were set within the walls and the entire structure was completely surrounded by a very deep, wide moat. In 1648, during the Civil War, Deal Castle was besieged but after that it never engaged in any further military action. Fortified during the Napoleonic Wars, many alterations were made during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Governor's lodgings were rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century, only to be destroyed again in 1941 by German bombs in the Second World War. It was the official residence of the Captain of the Cinque Ports, until 1951 and is now owned by English Heritage.

My links with Deal in Kent go back many years as my Nan lived in Great Mongeham then Ripple and finally Deal itself. It's the beginning of September 1983 and Red Red Wine by UB40 is number 1 in the UK pop charts. East Kent 1345 (PJJ 345S) loads passengers in the centre of South Street, Deal whilst operating town service 583. It was normal practice for Deal town services to uplift passengers from the middle of the road at trhis location!
