Fish and chips
Fish and chips
Fish and chips from fish and chip shops are freshly prepared from natural products. Fillets of fish, mostly haddock or cod but sometimes plaice and whiting, are covered in batter, fried until golden and served with freshly chipped potatoes. Fish and chips are a wholesome dish and lower in calories than many of their fast food rivals. They have been recommended by doctors for pregnant women and were one of the only foods not to be rationed during the war. Historians even argue that fish and chips helped us to win the Second World War. Britain’s favourite accompaniment to fish and chips is salt and vinegar but depending on the region, others are just as popular… mushy peas, tomato ketchup, curry sauce, gravy, or even a bottle of stout. Strange but true, the Chinese are so sweet on our fish and chips that they serve them with sugar.
Chana Masala
Chana Masala
I found this at Big Lots for $2 and decided to give it a try. First off it's one of the few boxed/bagged foods that even vaguely resembles the photo on the packaging. It tasted great and the chick peas had good texture, not mushy at all. It was spicy without being over powering and didn't require any additional seasonings to give some flavor. Well worth the $2 I spent on it and I'm sure I'll go back for more. It says there are three servings in the package but there is only aobut 1 cup total contents so that's stretching it a bit. I imagine this was done to make the calorie count appear more reasonable as each serving is 170 calories for a total of 510 calories for the whole package.
