Luang Prabang is the cultural and historic center of Laos. One of the most inviting cities in South East Asia, Luang Prabang lies on a picturesque peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers. The city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is filled with historic temples, tree-lined cobblestone lanes, colorful hilltribes, great shopping and probably the best food in Laos. The Lan Xang Kingdom (the first truly Lao Kingdom) was founded here in 1353 by Fa Ngum and remained the capital until 1545 when it was moved to Vientiane further south along the Mekong River. The name Luang Prabang derives from a sacred Buddha image called the Pha Bang which was a gift from the mighty Khmer Empire, hence the name Luang Prabang meaning Great Pha Bang. For us, Luang Prabang was of particular importance because of our interest in religious architecture. It is a treasure trove of various temple styles boasting Lao, Thai and Burmese characteristics. Luang Prabang is nestled on the highlands of Lao and touted as a small lovely town with friendly folks. Benefited from rich fertile land and its proximity to Mekhong River, the Luang Prabang people have enjoyed their simple way of lives which have been kept intact since the last century. Photo taken on the back of a tree wheeled motorcycle, our taxi driver, entering the center of Luang Prabang where Colonial French architecture mingles with traditional Lao stilt houses. Luang Prabang werd als stad in de jaren 90 door Unesco op de lijst van de belangrijkste cultuurgoederen gezet. Niet voor niets, want de tientallen tempels temidden van een prachtige natuur zijn heel bijzonder. Een van onze favoriete tempels is de Wat Xieng Thong. De mozaieken hier zijn niet religieus van aard maar laten tafereeltjes zien uit het leven van de man in de straat. Opvallend zijn ook de daken van de tempels in Luang Prabang: ze hebben lange punten die doorlopen tot aan de grond. Erg mooi is het stadsmuseum in het paleis van de voormalige koning van Laos. Hier staat het heiligste en grootste gouden beeld van het land, de Phra Bang. Tientallen kilo's goud werden gebruikt en de kostbaarste edelstenen. In Luang Prabang kun je lekker wandelen tussen de koloniale villa's en de sfeer op je laten inwerken.

This was by far the best airline food I've ever had, better my time in first class domestic. Dinner was rice topped with some pickled vegetables, salmon in a dill sauce, green beans, cold noodles with nori and sauce, a roll, some odd chicken-salad-like thing, a piece of ham, a piece of some sort of potted meat baked in pastry, a slice of tomato, and cookies. Whew. They also came by twice with drinks (thus the wine and beer).
