EISA award-what a nice camera!

Seeking a pocketable compact digital camera that can thus be taken everywhere, I researched same at various Web sites that rate all digital cameras and I concluded that essentially all of them that sell for under approximately $300 have flaws in their imaging capabilities. I then suddenly remembered getting an insert in one of my Amateur Photographer Magazine issues from England several months ago and upon locating that insert, titled “EISA Award”, I turned the pages until I found its ‘European Compact Camera 2008-2009" award winner and discovered it was Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TZ5. The description is as follows: “The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 has an extensive zoom range extending from very wide to telephoto angles of view. The 10x Leica DC 28-280mm (equivalent) lens provides focal lengths to suit almost every style and subject, in a single very useful unit. The camera’s compact size, slim profile, and high 9-million pixel image quality make it an ideal travel camera, as well as one you will always want to carry with you every day.” EISA stands for European Imaging and Sound Association, and giving their award to the TZ5 was meritable and appropriate. Images have typical beautiful Leica lens quality and the zoom range is sensational. The grab shot of Nickie above was captured with the zoom at 46mm with automatic flash, an f/stop of 3.6, and a shutter speed of 1/30 sec. The bokeh in the background is beautifully subtle and attractive. There is very slight softening of her and that is due to the slow shutter speed in combination with her suddenly moving upon hearing birds landing in fruit trees to her left. The LCD screen is big and full of lush image details and this makes up for the lack of a viewfinder. The camera body easily slips into shirt and pants pockets. The flash window is situated on the front of the camera. For stealth shooting, one can set the camera to ‘flash off’. I am completely satisfied with this purchase! We bought it at a local Best Buy for $356 and it was worth that, indeed!
