Rosette Nebula close-up raw EOS450D (I share this for 'educational' purposes)
I don?t consider myself qualified to teach anyone in this field, but I share this image cos? I thought it could be of interest for some other beginners like me to get an aproximate idea of what can be expected from a raw (unprocessed) image with a Canon EOS 450D (unmodified) camera model targetting this object (or similars in faintness) with a 3min exposure shot at 300mm focal length aperture f/5.6 and 1600ISO using an Astronomik CLS EOS clip filter from a moderately light polluted area with half moon. I know this nebula is a well appreciated target, this camera model is quite common in astrophotography, this exposure time is maybe the average limit that a non-high end equatorial mount allows working at 300mm focal length without obtaining star trailing (unless you work on the -much more advanced- PEC or guiding techniques), a 300mm lens that reaches f/5.6 aperture stop or so (lke my cheap Sigma zoom 70/300 unstabilized) is about the best telephoto configuration an average novice astrophotographer?s budget can afford, and last, not everybody has the possibility of moving to an unpolluted remote dark site or wait for the moonset to enjoy this hobby,so maybe this info could be of interest for someone out there, in order to help estimating in advance the needed exposure times or the expected performance with this setup and conditions. Non-technical comments on the results obtained: being said that this was my first try and clearly it doesn?t show too much detail at all, I must recognise that for me it was exciting to realize that the nebula was there. I don?t have a lot of experience locating deep sky objects yet, so this time when I reviewed the result in the camera?s LCD screen (with my back on the garden grass to avoid moving the mount ;-) ) and confirmed the presence of the -absolutely slight- red-coloured gas area around NGC2244 I felt like it was telling me "Hi folk. Yes I?m Rosette, it seems that you finally found me, guy. I?ve been waiting so long for you, and have a lot of things to tell you but you must be patient. Next time please collect my photons for 3 hours or so, cos? you know I?m pretty shy and need to go very slow with our relationship!" ;-). (Yes, I also realize astrophotography is driving me a little crazy).

Project 365+1 098/366 07april2008 Caught the caterpillar on one of my hibiscus. This time of year these fuzzy caterpillars start coming out everywhere. Some years they are so thick it is kind of creepy. And the wild thing is, for such a "handsome" caterpillar, they just turn into plain moths.
