sackville saddlesack medium
sackville saddlesack medium
Some (careless) pics of my Rivendell Sackville Saddlesack (Medium). I'm in the middle of packing it for my commute tomorrow and figured it couldn't hurt to have a reference for other bike commuters. It holds a lot of stuff. In the main compartment I bring a towel, change of clothes, toiletries, comb, makeup bag, wallet, newspaper, bagged lunch. It's tight but if you're not planning a fancy day, you can make it all fit. The side pockets hold a spare tube, minitool, patch kit, co2 cartridges, a local map, and a waterproof cover for my saddle. The work badge and keys go in the top flap. I don't keep my lock in the bag as it clips onto my bike. If you don't need to change your clothes, if you don't shower at work, or if you buy your lunch, then clearly you'll have more room available. The only minor issue I have is that the bag doesn't hold as much as it could for me because it doesn't sit flat on top of the rear rack. I have a Blackburn rack with a lip that comes up near the seatpost. No matter how close I'm able to move the rack to the bike, the bag doesn't sit flush. On the Rivendell site, this doesn't appear to be an issue with their bike/rack combos. Lest I give the wrong impression, I believe this bag was primarily designed to be used without a rack and this isn't a huge problem as the bag fits plenty as it is. It also helps to remove a piece of plastic that is velcroed in place to keep the bottom flat as that allows more room (unless you don't have a rack - in that case it's best to leave it where it is). General commuting tips - wrinkle-free clothes are best. I wouldn't pack a suit in there! And I keep some dress shoes at work for the days I ride in so that I don't need to bring them with me. It also helps if you have a locker if you have showers at your job so you can leave some of your toiletries there. Bring a spare plastic bag or two just in case it rains. I haven't had this bag out in the rain yet, but even though it's waxed canvas, I wouldn't want to take a chance on my electronics in case of a downpour. The bag is really well made and the reflective strip is a nice, bright touch. I added a tail-light to a strap on the back that was thoughtfully provided for such uses.
Axiom Low Rider racks
Axiom Low Rider racks
I'm finally pleased with my Axiom Low Rider pannier racks. To be honest I was about ready to throw them out after my last trip. When I got back I realized one of the bolts was cracked inside the mounting eyelet. No doubt do to the flawed design of these racks. The problem is they had no brace going over the tire (I added that), and would thus twist or torsion around the front fork causing unecissary and potentially fatal fatigue on the mounting bolts. On top of this they never mounted properly on my bike even after I went and replaced the original Cross Check fork with a Long Haul Trucker touring fork. Basically I flipped the racks left to right and then created a stabalizer bar that goes up over the wheel with a piece of oversized automotive brake line. Brake line is wonderful stuff. Soft enough to bend, but hardens as it's bent and as it ages. I'm very pleased with the end result as the pannier mounts are now level and my stabalizer bar minimizes if not removes any rocking of the bags around the axis of the fork. Note the original rectangular mount plates on the middle top of the rack. These are no longer in use at all. Instead I used meta straps to bold the top of the racks to eyelets in the middle of the fork. This was suprisingly secure.
