I've often wondered why people feel compelled to dress up in a special outfit when they go out for a spin on a bicycle. There are a number of aspects to the thing. It seems to me unlikely that anyone of sound mind would, of his own volition, undergo the loss of dignity that entails from going out in public in a Flash Gordon plastic helmet and a pair of brightly-hued shorts that reveal every crease and dimple in his bottom. No. Something must have influenced him fairly strongly. In a minority of cases (and perhaps as a minor factor in most cases) some obscure libido is satisfied by the wearing of skin-tight Spandex with no undergarments. But then there is what might be called commercialism. One sometimes hears the phrase "supply and demand" ...always with the implication that manufacturers somehow "supply" what the consumer (who else?) "demands". Are we expected to believe that the captains of our industries were beseiged in their boardrooms by informed consumers "demanding" pyramidal tea bags or soap-on-a-rope or mobile telephones? I'm sure we must all sometimes think to ourselves how nice it would be to have, say, a domestic appliance that could do the dusting ...or whatever... but in the normal way a demand can't exist for something that isn't available. The supply has to precede the demand. What happens is that a clever chap in New Product Development comes up with some novelty that his company can make and supply. All he has to do is stimulate an artificial demand and the money comes rolling in. The black arts of publicity and advertising are deployed. This largely boils down to implanting in peoples' minds the idea that their status and attractiveness to the opposite sex will increase if they buy one of these usually superfluous new products. Thus cycling, a convenient, health-giving and almost free (after the initial outlay) means of travelling over shortish distances, and one of the very few harmless creations of applied technology, was re-invented as an "extreme sport" for which you needed special clothes, equipment and accessories. I suppose cyclists believe they thought of it all themselves. As you watch a puffing, red-faced cyclist hurtling through red traffic lights, or weaving in and out of the traffic swearing at motorists as he tries to exceed his best journey time to work ("personal best" is the record that anyone can break) you can see how behaviour is influenced by clothing. "Militant" cyclists are usually health service administrators or left-wing librarians and, dressed in ordinary clothes, with their beards and spectacles, look positively mild-mannered ...and probably are. As you can see from this 14 year-old photograph, my own cycling get-up consists of ordinary clothing adapted for cycling by the addition of trouser clips ...probably the last extant pair in England. Smiling benignly at, or, more accurately, through passers-by, the effect I aim for is of a 1950s grammar school master (English and History), or a conscientious country parson cycling, perhaps a little unwillingly, to take one or other of the statutory daily services.

Not a great picture, but here's my new toy - shot in the downstairs bathroom-cum-bike shelter, as the only half-decent light is found there today. I'd like some advice, please. I bought this on ebay as an early Christmas gift to myself. This is a steel Harry Quinn road racing bike with classic parts which I'd date back to the mid-late 1970's (Campagnolo derailleur, Cinelli bars and Mafac breaks). It is in pretty good nick, with some surface rust on the frame - the colour and decals look original, though. I've turned it upside down to date it by its serial number but couldn't find one. I don't really want to respray and don;t mind blemishes as long as I can stop it rusting further. I'd like it as an exercise /commuting bike and as we live in hilly countryside, I'd like to keep the gears. One thing I'll do is change the wheels (currently has tubeless tyres) and replace the pulls. Is there anything else I should be doing to keep the classic look? What is the best way to keep rust at bay? Would it be worth to touch up the frame? How could I date the bike? It was given to the previous owner in 1981, but was not new then. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am a racing bike novice, having ridden hybrids and MTB's for most of my life.
