Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors
Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors
Now nearing its 60th printing in English and translated into nineteen languages, Michael E. Porter's Competitive Strategy has transformed the theory, practice, and teaching of business strategy throughout the world. Electrifying in its simplicity -- like all great breakthroughs -- Porter's analysis of industries captures the complexity of industry competition in five underlying forces. Porter introduces one of the most powerful competitive tools yet developed: his three generic strategies -- lowest cost, differentiation, and focus -- which bring structure to the task of strategic positioning. He shows how competitive advantage can be defined in terms of relative cost and relative prices, thus linking it directly to profitability, and presents a whole new perspective on how profit is created and divided. In the almost two decades since publication, Porter's framework for predicting competitor behavior has transformed the way in which companies look at their rivals and has given rise to the new discipline of competitor assessment.
More than a million managers in both large and small companies, investment analysts, consultants, students, and scholars throughout the world have internalized Porter's ideas and applied them to assess industries, understand competitors,, and choose competitive positions. The ideas in the book address the underlying fundamentals of competition in a way that is independent of the specifics of the ways companies go about competing.
Competitive Strategy has filled a void in management thinking. It provides an enduring foundation and grounding point on which all subsequent work can be built. By bringing a disciplined structure to the question of how firms achieve superior profitability, Porter's rich frameworks and deep insights comprise a sophisticated view of competition unsurpassed in the last quarter-century.

2009 Purina Incredible Dog Challenge - Del Mar RaceTrack
Our club, the SCJRTC (Southern Calif. Jack Russell Terrier Club) was invited to provide JRTs for the hurdle racing. On practice day, Kobe did not like the starting box, would turn himself around and would not leave when the gate flipped up. This performance got him disqualified. On race day, Chase, made it to the second heat and was eliminated when she came in fourth. Not bad for a 10 yr old girl! The following racing photos you will be seeing were taken on the practice day as I was working with Chase on race day and not shooting the event. To be aired on ESPN2 and ABC July 25 and August 1. Check your local listings. UPDATE The people from Purina and Carson Events were just as nice as they could be and truly into making this a first class production. The frosting on the cake was having the opportunity to get to know fellow Jack Russell competitors, and all folks from all over the country, who competed in Agility, Frisbee and Diving Dog. Despite the competitive nature of the event, the spirite of comradery between the contestants was truly amazing. I took over 2,000 shots during the 2 day event. Most came out fairly well and I've been spending more time in post production, sifting out the best shots, than behind the camera lately. As I get through this, I will be posting photos from some of the other events too, so check back soon, some of this stuff is pretty good. I wish everyone a great 4th of July weekend!

Today I attended the finals of the 4th Annual Wake Boarder Competition at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. What a great time and beautiful weather. I only got to see the Main Event Competition. cwd1261 ~ Freeze Frame - It's not just a J. Giles Band song...it's a CWD assignment! Capture something that you can't see with your naked eye. Stop motion. Fast shutter speed, baby. No blur! The camera was in Sport Mode and the photo stats says the exposure was 1/1000. I know that we usually see the wake boarder flipping but the spray of the water off the board is a blur to the naked eye. Hope this fits the assignment. If not, you will let me know. But please enjoy it just because of the ability of the wake boarder. I was very impressed of their talent and fearlessness. There are a few more wake board images on my flickr page.
