Member Bios

Wendy Wong

 Wendy Wong is Senior Vice President of Marketing at The Ken Blanchard Companies, where she stewards integrated marketing and branding, and contributes to strategy and new business model development. Wendy began her career in book publishing, then held leadership positions at large business-to-business information services companies after earning her MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School. Wendy has also worked in start-ups and entrepreneurial businesses, and frequently consults on new business plans co-created by her entrepreneur husband and son. She has authored articles on marketing and leadership topics. She has been part of the fast-changing learning and development field for eight years, and is passionate about enabling workplaces that inspire and engage the human spirit.

Praveen Madan

Praveen Madan
 is one of the leading independent booksellers and literary event producers in the SF Bay Area.  He is the co-owner of Booksmith and Berkeley Arts & Letters, and leader of the Kepler's 2020 initiative which is pioneering a new open-sourced model for building the community bookstore of the future.  Since entering the bookselling field five years ago, Praveen has become one of the most innovative and nationally recognized leaders in reinventing bookselling and literary communities.  He draws on two decades of management experience as an executive and consultant to leading companies in the Silicon Valley high-tech world and a life-long passion for good books.


















 

Bill Upton

Bill Upton is vice president of operations for Edwards Brothers Malloy, which is one of the leading book printers in the U.S. and one of BK’s two principal book printers. Bill is a past president of the Book Manufacturers’ Institute, and he is an active member of the Book Industry Environmental Council.  After earning an MBA degree, Bill began working full time at Malloy in 1981 and served as a customer service representative, sales representative, customer service manager, and vice president of manufacturing before becoming president in 1998.  Bill moved into his current role in early 2012, when Malloy merged with Edwards Brothers.

Jamie Showkeir

Jamie Showkeir is past president of the Board of Directors of the BK Authors Cooperative (which is legally and administratively separate from Berrett-Koehler Publishers although closely aligned) and he represents the Co-op in particular and BK authors generally on the BK Board. He is author with his wife and business partner Maren of two Berrett-Koehler books, Authentic Conversations (2008) and Yoga Wisdom at Work (2013). Since the 1980s, Jamie has been a consultant and trainer helping individuals and organizations improve productivity and results while creating workplaces where people find meaning and purpose. He is a managing partner at henning-showkeir & associates, inc.


David Marshall

David Marshall heads the editorial department, which is responsible for 35-40 new titles per year and 5-10 digital products or initiatives. Berrett-Koehler’s digital publishing program includes e-books, rich-media enhanced e-books, self-assessments, games, animations, webinar products, mobile apps, author videos, and viral marketing movies. David is software industry veteran who received his MBA from Harvard Business School with concentration in technology marketing and international business. He is also a best-selling coauthor of prompted journals that foster family communication including The Book of Myself, The Book of Us, and What I Love About You (over 760,000 copies sold).  The newest books from David and Kate are My Life Map: A Journal to Help You Shape Your Future (November 2012, Gotham Books) and What I Love About You, Mom (March 2013, Plume Books).

Steven Piersanti

Steven Piersanti
 is president and publisher of Berrett-Koehler Publishers. Before founding Berrett-Koehler in 1992, Steve served as president and CEO of Jossey-Bass Publishers in San Francisco after previous service as copywriter, marketing director, editor, editorial director, and executive vice president.

Marilyn McConnell

Marilyn McConnell is president, CEO, and owner (since 1998) of American International Distribution Corporation (AIDC), which handles warehousing, customer service, order processing, shipping, and collections for all of BK’s nontrade print book business in the U.S. -- including our direct mail, website, special sales, and author sales business — and for all shipments to our foreign distributors. AIDC also maintains and services our websites as part of their suite of services for BK. AIDC is one of BK’s principal service providers, and BK is one of AIDC’s principal clients. Prior to 1998, Marilyn was vice president and assistant manger of data processing operations for Merchants Bank, manager of information systems for HearthStone Corporation, and a self-employed business consultant.  She has served on the Vermont Business Roundtable, numerous non-profit boards of directors and is currently a trustee of the Community Sailing Center which encourages and celebrates the responsible use and long term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community.       

Julie O'Mara

Julie O’Mara
represents a BK customer perspective and has been a frequent purchaser of BK books since our founding in 1992. Julie is president of an organization development consulting firm specializing in leadership, facilitation, and managing diversity. Previously, she was director of communications for The Marmon Group, a billion-dollar international conglomerate, and she began her career in marketing communications at Whirlpool Corporation.  Julie is former national president of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and has received many leadership and training awards.  She is founder and manager of the conference-call based “Diversity Book Club” for diversity professionals, and is active in a neighborhood book club.  Julie is co-author of the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks and a member of the Standards Taskforce of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  She is coauthor of the bestselling Jossey-Bass book, Managing Workforce 2000: Gaining the Diversity Advantage.

Matt McGraw

Matt McGraw is founder and CEO of Rocket Science Consulting Corp, a leading nationwide Design + Technology firm, which has been BK’s chief provider of information technology services since 2002. Matt started his technology career in a college computer lab and began IT consulting in 1998 with All Bases Covered, the first national IT consulting firm for small businesses. Here he became Manager of Consulting Services before leaving in 2002 to found Rocket Science. He currently serves as a Member of the Apple Consultants Advisory Board for Apple Computer, and Member of the Entrepreneurship@Cornell Advisory Council for Cornell University.
