Multimedia Text Sets

Today's multimedia, multimodal world necessitates literacy instruction that includes a variety of text forms such as film, print, music, Internet, photographs.

What is a Multimedia Text Set?  A Multimedia Text Set or MTS is a set of different forms of media surrounding a common topic, theme or issue.  A MTS is reflective of the texts of today's world in that it incorporates print/text, video, music, Internet sources, images, photographs, cartoons, etc. Students need to be taught how to read these different forms of texts, synthesize information and develop an opinion of their own which they can backup with evidence.

Multimedia text sets as a whole interconnect and serve to include multiple perspectives to support deeper understandings of the content and essential concepts.

The texts themselves are experiences that build on one another to create a web of connections that, in turn, create complex layers of meanings and understandings.

Text Sets

A Text Set is a collection of several fiction and/or non-fiction books with a common theme. The theme is not always obvious, requiring readers to stretch their thinking. A Text Set may include an outlier. An outlier is a book that has a deeper, hidden text-to-text connection. A "text" in a collection may also include music, poetry, news articles and/or videos.

The texts themselves are experiences that build on one another to create a web of connections that, in turn, create complex layers of meanings and understandings.             (from: Grand Conversations Across Texts)
