BEPSII includes Early Career Scientist (ECS) representatives on its Steering Committee (SC), and with current members Laura Dalman and Emelia Chamberlain completing their two-year terms, we now seek to fill these positions. We are therefore opening applications for two ECS (mid-late PhD through postdoctorate) to join the BEPSII SC. Ideally, the new members will have some understanding of the BEPSII community and our science plan (see link here).
The BEPSII SC meets a handful of times a year via web conference to discuss task groups’ progress, meeting plans, and sponsor reporting, as well as any overarching BEPSII publications or proposals. SC members take on leadership roles in at least one of the eight task groups. The BEPSII SC usually meets every second year in person in connection with the annual BEPSII meeting. While BEPSII is not a funded organisation per se, we do receive limited funding from our sponsors (SOLAS, SCOR, CliC, SCAR). This funding usually provides some travel support for SC members and other ECS.
ECS will be actively involved in group decisions related to BEPSII, will receive mentorship in leading taskgroups and activities in international science coordination and communication. Specifically, your role within BEPSII will be to organize the ECS side meetings during the annual BEPSII meetings (alternating online and in-person) and the BEPSII seminar series (occurring approximately bi-monthly). Also, you will be involved in organizing our biennial ECS-exchange program that is meant to strengthen collaboration between BEPSII-associated institutes. During the first year you will overlap with the previous ECS members of the steering committee to smooth the transition into the new role.
If you are an ECS and interested in joining the BEPSII steering committee, please send us a 1-page letter indicating your career status and BEPSII related research interests, and a motivation for which tasks/task groups (besides the ones mentioned above) you are most interested in contributing to (see the updated Appendix of our 5-year science plan, link above).
Please send your application to bepsiiseaice@gmail.com and cc to Letizia.Tedesco@environment.fi and j.stefels@rug.nl by April 24th 2026. The new ECS SC term will start on June 1st 2026 and continue until the BEPSII 2029 annual meeting.
If you would like to get some insights into the position from an ECS perspective, please feel free to reach out to our current ECS representatives Laura Dalman (laura.dalman@ulb.be) and Emelia Chamberlain (Emelia.chamberlain@whoi.edu).
Deadline for application: 24 April 2026
