Ben Hill

Thanks for visiting!  I work in communications at the University of Iowa, where I earned a B.A. in Cinema studying nonfiction and experimental film and video.  I love to explore art, sport, science and history through multimedia projects.  I like to produce art- I've produced, directed, written, filmed or edited well over a hundred long and short form programs for TV, web and DVD.  I even produced an album of children's songs.

Some of my recent collaborations include City of Literature (2012, writer/director) and Jackson Pollock's Mural: The Story of a Modern Masterpiece (2015, executive producer).  My latest project in the works is about the origins and development of a college football program.  You can see examples of my projects below.  Drop me a line if you'd like to connect

Go Hawks (2015)

City of Literature (2012) (57 minutes, high definition)

A one-hour documentary I produced at the University of Iowa on the history of creative writing in Iowa City, Iowa, home of the famed Iowa Writers' Workshop and the International Writing Program.  Premiered on Iowa Public Television fall 2012. Below is the trailer:

Writers on the Fly (2010-2015) (series, high definition) (trailer)

Over the past five years I've interviewed many of the best writers in America, all of whom stop in Iowa City for one reason or another.  This project has been a wonderful collaboration with the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, an awesome organization in a one-of-a-kind community.  The full series can be seen at youtube.com/cityofliteratureusa

Racing for a Cure (2014)

An assignment at the University of Iowa to produce a video feature for Big Ten Network about the Wynn Institute for Vision Research and their sponsorship of former Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier in order to raise awareness for research on blinding eye diseases.

2015: A Look Back

Project for the University of Iowa that I edited, sharing mainly because it shows off the excellent videography and photography skills of the talented team I work with.

Ensuring the Future

I produced this video as a pro bono work for the Iowa City School District Foundation, which provides classroom enrichment and cultural opportunities for all kids in the school district.

A Party for Bill (2012)

Video documenting a party for my sister in law's 94-year old father, who when faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis decided to have a 'funeral party' while he could enjoy it with his friends and family.

Vasili from Kokkoras

My sister-in-law asked me to create a video about her very old and very Greek father, using collected photos and his favorite music, to help give people a glimpse of his epic and adventurous life both in Greece and after he came to America.  While I didn't spend a ton of time on this relatively simple video, I have to say it was one of the most rewarding pieces I've made.  We were amazed that Bill himself was by far the biggest fan of this video, as he watched it over and over again in the weeks and months before he passed away, occasionally pointing to the screen and saying simply, "it's my life".
