Class Offerings


Classes offered may include the following:
(Recommendations do not necessarily exclude those who do not fit the criteria.)



College Music Prep
An exploration of participating in music beyond high school as well as what to expect at college.  This class is especially recommended for students considering majoring, minoring, or having a career in music.
Recommended Age: Upperclassmen

Composition
Students learn the basics of writing music and harmonization.  This class is limited to 16 participants.
Recommended Age:  High School
Recommended Skills:
     - Able to read music in both treble and bass clefs
     - Basic piano skills

Conducting
Students are introduced to the art of leading a musical ensemble by learning the basic skills of the conductor.
Recommended Age:  8th grade or older

Electronic Instruments
Students have the opportunity to play on electronic instruments such as the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) and electronic percussion.  This class is limited to 6 participants.
Recommended Age:  High School / Upperclassmen

Jazz History
Students explore Jazz from its historic roots to modern day practices.

Jazz Improvisation (Beginning)
Students receive an introduction to improvising, or creating instantaneous melodies while performing.  
Recommended Age:  Upper Middle School
Recommended Skills:  Basic understanding of scales

Jazz Improvisation (Advanced)
Advanced training for jazz musicians interested in improvisation.
Recommended Age:  High School
Recommended Skills:  Understanding of scales

Music Theory I
Students will learn basic concepts of music including reading in both treble and bass clefs, key signatures, and terminology.  Excellent for beginners.
Recommended Age:  Middle School or those with little theory training

Music Theory II
Students continue theory practice with intermediate level concepts such as scales and chords, among others.
Recommended Age:  Upper Middle School / Early High School
Recommended Skills: 
     - Understanding of key signatures
     - Ability to read treble and bass clefs

Music History
An overview of the history of western music.

Music Technology
An introduction to the world of music software including MIDI and Finale.  Class is limited to 10 participants.
Recommended Age:  High School
Recommended Skills:  Basic computer skills

Rhythm
Students focus on counting and learning various rhythm patterns through multiple performance methods. 
Recommended Age:  Middle School

Singing for Instrumentalists
Students will learn how singing is an important skill for instrumentalists to develop!  Ear-training and sight-singing practice will lead to becoming better players and musicians.  Students will work on exercises to develop these skills, as well as sing songs as a group.

World Music
An interactive introduction to the music of other cultures.
