We currently work alongside Bowland High School, and have done for the past 8 years to deliver a BTEC level 2 Countryside and Environment course.
It gives two year groups of up to sixteen students each, the opportunity to gain an understanding of many aspects within the countryside and environment. Its a hands on course where they learn and get chance to undertake a wide variety of tasks. Last year the students helped build and install over 100 bird boxes
Topics covered include animal health and welfare, animal husbandry, estate maintenance and boundaries, introduction to practical forestry and habitat maintenance.
The students love coming to the farm as it provides an alternative to learning in the classroom, gaining an insight into rural careers. Sadly the governing board do not allow a BTEC level 2 to be a GCSE equivalent any longer, but we have had many success stories through the course. With students successfully managing to get jobs and apprenticeships such as wildlife rangers, landscape gardeners with some going on to further their education in Agriculture.
