The Xingu River

For hundreds of years, the Xingu River basin has been home to a multitude of lifestyles in Brazil, made up of rural and urban communities.

The river flows 1,230 miles from the central Savannah region of Mato Grosso to the Amazon River.

In 1989, an international movement led by the Kayapó stopped state-owned electric company Eletronorte´s plans to construct a complex of six dams on the Xingu and its tributary, the Iriri.
