16/365: Anecdote time...
Okay. Anecdote time... Let me tell you about the Spa lady with the gun. Last time I was on a cruise, as I’ve said before, I walked every where. I had a pretty independent time for myself as I spent a lot of the cruise away from my family, walking around, exploring, etc. So it wasn’t a problem when my Mom and Dad got invited on the formal night to the Captain’s table. Strangely, it wasn’t the Captain at the Captain’s table, but the chief engineer. Go figure. Anyways, they got invited and my brother and I weren’t, but we didn’t have a problem with this. We’d just have dinner in the cabin that night, as we did. On thing I really wanted to do since I heard about the invitation that night, was to get a photograph of them at the Captain’s table. “But you can get that from the ship photographer.” You might think, (or not, but let’s think hypothetically here). No, I needed my own special kind of photograph of my parents at the captains table. So off to the dining room I went, not dressed formally, and that I worried about. So it came to the point where I got to the dining room. Outside the entrance, the spa staff was setting up a promotional table for spa services. Spas are nice, but I haven’t had enough experience with them to know if they’re my thing. So I basically ignored the spa aspect of the whole thing and asked them if they knew if it would be okay for me to go into the dining room. They said they didn’t know. To make a very long story not quite as long (I have this ability to make any short story drag on. Sorry.) I was able to get that special picture of them, just like the monotonous ones they took on the Ile de France at their Captain’s table dinners in the 1920s and early 30s. We knew the assistant Maitre D from two previous trips, so he arranged anything for us. So I had the picture. “Yes!” I thought, “Now I can get back to the room and wait for our dinner to arrive.” Not so fast, as it turned out. Much to my dismay. The Spa girl I asked about the photograph matter asked me if I had gotten the picture, but that’s not what she was interested in. She was interested in me. Not romantically. Heck, no. I was a sales target. “I’ll just pencil you in for the sea day after Cozumel.” She said pretty swiftly. “Full body massage and seaweed float.” Full body what? And float? Massage? I’m not known for taking my clothes off in front of other people. At least not in the physical condition that I’m in. I’ve still got to get rid of that spare tire around my waist, you know. So not even the shirt was coming off at that time. At the moment, it still wouldn’t.... And besides – you should have seen this girl. She was young, blonde, more than pretty and quite bewitching overall. I would rather not have subjected her to my physique. You can say I have a warped body image if you like, but I don’t. I know who I am and I’m working on making things better and losing weight, so it’s not an image thing, just personal preference. “I can tell your tension builds up in your shoulders.” She says, massaging my shoulder, “You know a massage is good for you? Why don’t you try it?” And aren’t massages expensive? Don’t they take a long time? Time that I myself might rather spend photographing? Drawing in the cafe in the foyer? Or walking around the ship (exercise is equally good for you, you know.) I don’t have any money of my own… etc, etc, etc. For everything I had come up with, there was an emotional appeal. It was like she had stuck a gun to my head and I was getting this massage whether I liked it or not. “I’ve worked with eighty-year olds who are wrinkly. I’m used to it.” She said. She was going to make that sale no matter what. I’d like to note here that the conversation started at the spa table next to the elevator bank, she had backed me into the stair rail on the other side of the elevator lobby by the time she was massaging my shoulder. “So I have you booked in for two on the next sea day?” She said, quite suddenly. “Fine.” I just wanted to leave by that time. So I went back to the cabin and himmed and hawed about it. Sure, a massage is a nice thing, but only if one goes into it voluntarily. That’s the key word. Voluntary. I don’t like to be forced into anything, no matter how good it might feel. The day came. I went reluctantly to the spa and was handed this form to fill out, asking me if I was pregnant or nursing or going through menopause (I’m sure you can guess my answer) and if I had image problems, freckles, pimples-that-need-eradicating, etc. I filled it out and when I got to the comments section I was ready to give them a piece of my mind… but I thought better of it. I was able to reduce my sentence from a full body massage to a foot massage and mini facial (Hmm… very yuppie sounding.) Which I thought was great – my skin felt really cleared after the facial. I thought “Hey, I could get used to this.” Only problem was after the facial mask was removed I enjoyed that clean, open pored feDenial...it apparently weighs 9 pounds
I've put on 9 pounds since April. My doctor pointed that out to me today. Told me to get that in check. That sure my BMI is in the healthy range but I'm getting older and that was a lot of weight in a short amount of time and I'm going back on the pill and I should think about all the weight that can happen during menopause and woah nelly woman get your ass back to the gym. Most of that is really what she said. With my own dramatic whiny baby flair added in. I already knew I'd put on a bunch of weight in a short amount of time. Apparently, you can't stop going to the gym and continue to eat the way you were while going to the gym and lose weight. You especially cannot stop going to the gym and increase how much you eat and expect to lose weight. Ah denial. Ya tell yourself it's all good and that you're doing great and you'll get back in the groove next week. I'm still really waiting for next week to happen. Instead I've spent the rest of the day feeling like a baby and crying like a fool. One more thing to add to the pile of things I need to work on. *sigh*
