This pair of Bighorn Sheep, a ewe and her yearling, were foraging for food on the canyon wall just north of the Trailview overlook at Grand Canyon National Park. Even though I was about 100 yards away, I was upwind of them. The yearling seemed to have the shorter attention span of the two. Mom kept her eye on me pretty much the whole time, but eventually tried to guide her youngster away. She kept walking off, over to the fracture in the rock, but the yearling was more interested in the clicking noise coming from the crazy guy with the camera. Mom kept running back and forth, and eventually they both left together. This behavior is typical of ewes (female sheep). They are nomadic most of the year, with a larger range than the males. They graze on the move, possibly to keep from being vulnerable to predation. The rams, often weighing 200 plus pounds, are known to eat and sleep within a relatively small area (except during the rut), which helps promote digestion and increase body mass without burning excess calories. Rutting often occurs in August, with the breeding season following shortly thereafter (though this is not always the case in Southern Arizona, where mild winters can promote breeding pretty much year round). Gestation is around six months, and lambs are often born at the tail end of winter, usually March or early April.

"Week 1" ~ 52 Weeks Project
Start Date: Saturday, June 13, 2009 I'm working on getting back to my pre-pregnancy body (well, sort of)...I know my body will never quite be the same, but there's no harm in trying right? lol I'm following the Canada Food Guide to Healthy Eating - no calorie counting for me, and I'm already pretty good at portion control too. I've been attached to a pump basically since Chaisy was born 3 1/2 months ago and I'm tired of eating convenience foods, eating very little in the veggie department, and not getting much exercise! I'm in the process of transitioning Chaisy to formula (long story...to sum up - can't afford the drugs & supplements to maintain my milk supply. It's always been a struggle, oi) ...and I'm tired of wearing this fleece to hide my ginormous tatas!
