Random free stuff
On the left: Catalog with Games! Anime! Geek stuff! I guess one avantage of not having much social life is fanboys get to shop more. On the upper right: One of the famous tissue packets. This one has a gal girl pushing a website called PC Max. Which looks like it's selling fake-rhinestone encrusted cellphones. And is in fact an online dating service. Go figure. On the lower right: Picked this 206-page thick brochure up outside a 7-11, mostly because of the outrageous costume on the cover girl. Inside are ads for: tacky makeup, apartments, party dresses (sugar-net.com is a sterling example), spiritual counseling, restaurants, financial counseling, tattoos and more. The bulk of the ads seem to be for hostess bars though (the Japanese equivalent of strip clubs). Given the focus of the other ads, I have to presume that the smut joints aren't soliciting customers, but employees. So basically, if you want to live the tramp lifestyle, complete guides are available for free at the convenience store! What a weird country this is.

MAX - DVD Movie
The dark connections between art, desire, and evil fuel Max, an alternate-history fantasy that imagines what might have happened if a Jewish art dealer named Max Rothman (John Cusack, High Fidelity) had befriended Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor, Shine) when he was a frustrated artist, before he turned to politics to vent his hatred. Some critics have expressed fear that even to attempt to make Hitler understandable is to diffuse or dismiss his malignancy; but watching Hitler vacillate between Rothman's attempts at mentorship and the encouragement of an ambitious military officer demonstrates the pettiness, desperation, and craven need that can bring horror into the world. Cusack portrays a generous man with simple decency and not a trace of grandstanding, but Taylor--with glittering eyes and lips twisted with bile--is both fascinating and repellent in an impressive performance. An intelligent and complex film, Max deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer
