Scream VI was quite the pleasant surprise.
Following the relative success of the first franchise reboot, I can easily say that I liked Scream VI more than its recent counterpart. I didn’t dislike the 5th Scream installment, but I recall finding it to feel a bit like a rehashing of material that was previously done much better. With Scream 6, though I don’t think it really holds a candle to the original or Scream 2, I feel like 6 entered uncharted territory by bringing Ghostface out of suburban homes and into the city. The new landscape provided a fresh take on the familiar killer and brought a whole new set of obstacles for the main heroes.
Not that it’s of any surprise, but Jenna Ortega delivered another great performance as this new generation’s up and coming scream queen. Melissa Barrera also brought an equally great screen presence as Ortega’s sister. The two create a powerful dynamic and are excellent leads to this current era of Scream.
Scream VI certainly isn’t without its flaws, as I found it to be a bit overly predictable and some of the movie reference monologues to be slightly overdone, but all in all, I had a good time. This Scream also seemed to up the ante when it came to brutality of its gore factor, which also set it slightly apart from some of its predecessors.
When Scream 5 came out, I wasn’t overly excited about the prospect of the franchise being rebooted, but now my opinions have changed. Scream 6 has definitely made me more excited for what’s to come.
