Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is full of magic, nostalgia, and Disney charm.
Gracious and naive Princess Snow White is seemingly unaware of her stepmother, the Evil Queen's, jealousy towards her beauty. One day, while wandering in the woods, Snow White is confronted by the Huntsman, who has been sent to cut out her heart so the Evil Queen will be the fairest of them all. Saved by the Huntsman's inability to take her life, Snow White flees into the forest and stumbles upon a cottage inhabited by seven dwarfs. It is here she must hide from the Evil Queen and hope her prince will come to save her.
What can there be to critique about a classic such as Snow White? Nothing really, so for that reason, I shall keep this review short and sweet. For me, there's hardly anything that can send me back to my childhood more than watching one of the original animated Disney movies. I remember being very young and the feeling of excitement I would get when one of those VHSes was put into the VCR and that wonderful Disney insignia would appear and the shooting star would travel over the castle. I knew at that moment, that some wonderful enchantment was about to begin.
For me, what I truly enjoy the most about the older Disney films, especially the princess ones, are the songs that fill them. The music in today's Disney films are great, but there's something so transportive and special about that vintage sound found in those movies. I absolutely love how there's an overture that introduces the story, and how you can hear the blend of the voices in the chorus as they introduce and close the fairytale. It's a sound that has a direct route to my heart, and it fills me with absolute joy every time I hear it.
What never ceases to baffle me about Snow White and other similar movies, is the artistry and amount of work that clearly went into them. I watch Snow White knowing that each moment of film is hand drawn, but it is still hard to believe. In this movie, you can occasionally see the slightest shutter that eludes to the animation process, but it is so seamless that it is almost impossible to notice unless you were looking for it. The artistry is truly something to marvel at.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs makes me wish I could travel back in time to its premiere, and be a part of the audience getting to see this film for the very first time. I can only imagine it must have been one incredibly magical night to behold.
