When it's time to get out in the apiary for the field portion of your classes make sure you come ready to wrangle bees.
  • If you have any health concerns please consult your physician on what the appropriate precautions are for you in the bee yard in case of an allergic or localized reaction.
  • Protective gear is also a must. Wear clothing that completely covers your body from head to toe and leaves no gaps where the bees could crawl through.  What you choose to wear in your own apiary is up to you but the teaching apiary's dress code is total covering.
    • long sleeve shirt
    • long pants
    • closed toe shoes
    • hat and veil
    • gloves
  • BYOE Bring your own equipment so you can become familiar with the tools you use such as hive tools and smoker.  However, please be sure to clean your tools with a diluted bleach solution so you don't bring any diseases into the teaching apiary.
  • A clear mind is essential to working with our four winged friends.  Make sure you get a good night sleep and that you leave the stresses of your everyday life at home.
  • Water is life.  Working with bees can be thirsty work or you may just want to take a break and step away from the bees for a minute.  There's nothing like a water break to refresh you and get you ready for another go.
  • Your favorite pencil.  Hive notes are a required part of every field day.
