Dr Bee Berx

Physical Oceanographer

based at

Scottish Government's Marine Directorate

Aberdeen, U.K.

I am a physical oceanographer interested in the ocean circulation of the sub-polar North Atlantic and European continental shelf, and its role in the global climate. My research focuses on observing currents and water properties, with a particular focus on those originating from the Atlantic Ocean which enter the northern North Sea and their exchange with the Nordic Seas in the Faroe-Shetland Channel. I am also interested in understanding how these change because of natural variability and because of human-induced climate change, with a focus on how these changes to the physical marine environment impact the ecosystem.

Research Interests

Ocean climate variability and its importance to the marine ecosystem function and productivity.

Ocean circulation and water properties in Scottish Waters, with a particular focus of the Atlantic Water pathways in the region. This includes the role of the circulation pathways in the Faroe-Shetland Channel and the onward pathway of the Atlantic-origin waters in the northern North Sea.

Sustained ocean observations and emerging technologies, including the long-term monitoring programmes managed by Scottish Government's Marine Directorate (such as its offshore monitoring and the Scottish Coastal Observatory).

Disentangling the natural and human-forced changes in the marine environment and ecosystems from long-term observations and projecting how these will change under future climate scenarios.
