Rank Requirements

The rank of Shodan (first degree black belt) may be given at one year if the total hours and technical requirements are met. The recommended hours per week listed below, if followed, will result in the total hours needed at the recommended time in grade and the total time in the art. No person shall be deprived of a rank when the total hours and technical requirements are met, regardless of how long it takes to meet those hours.

Technical Requirements
Rank Requirements
Yonkyu Walking, Releases, 1-5 of the kata, 1st half of the 1st rondori drill, back falls.
Sankyu All of the above, plus: 6-10 of the kata, 1st rondori drill, front rolls staying down.
Nikyu All of the above, plus: 11-14 of the kata, adv variations of the 1st rondori drill, front rolls to standing.
Ikkyu All of the above, plus: 15-17 of the kata, 2nd rondori drill, advanced ukemi including side falls.
Shodan Tegatana-no-kata, Randori-no-kata (1 through 17), plus the first 5 movements of Owaza Ju Pon.
Nidan Advanced skills in all areas, Owaza Ju Pon complete, 1-16 of San Kata
Sandan 1-34 of San Kata, the first 14 techniques of Yon Kata, advancement of all skills especially in the areas of teaching the application of the principles of our system and of Aikido 
Yondan The candidate must demonstrate extraordinary knowledge of all Aikido principles, katas and techniques, a total commitment to the art of Aikido and the teaching thereof is required 
Godan Advancement of all skills required 
Rokudan Extra-ordinary teaching and leadership skill required 
Shichidan Must be an outstanding contributor to the art and all of its precepts and techniques whether physical or spiritual 
Hachidan Must have demonstrated continuing contributions to Aikido
Kudan Red belt awarded by the committee of full professors
Judan Red belt awarded by the committee of full professors
