This chart shows worldwide smartphone sales to end users by Operating System in 2010 and 2009 (expressed as a percentage of market share). Apple and Android are clearly gaining users, whereas Symbian, the Blackberry, and Microsoft are losing out to the competition. According to Roberta Cozza, a principal research analyst at Gartner (where all this data originated from),the smartphone market remains concentrated in advanced markets, where buyers have more disposable income and where networks are fast enough to support smartphones' full feature sets. “Western Europe and North America accounted for 52.3 percent of global smartphone sales in the fourth quarter of 2010, with smartphones accounting for close to half of all handsets sold in these regions,” she said.

One of the Windows Media guys let me do a side-by-side comparison of my Audiovox SMT5600 and his new Qtek smartphone (I don't know the model number, there are so many from Qtek). It's about the same size, etc, and runs Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphones (no WM5 preview exclusive for me!), but notice the 4 new hardware buttons, for IE and media shuttle controls, emphasizing the device's role as a media player.
