Bedfordshire and Luton Athletes punch above their weight

Once again Bedfordshire and Luton Schools’ athletes punched above their weight at the English Schools Athletics Championships held in Birmingham last weekend, with 2 gold, a silver and 2 bronze medals and 3 internationals from their small team of 21 athletes.

Star of the show as Kempston Challenger Academy’s Frankie Johnson who set a Championship Best Performance in winning the Inter Boys Pole Vault for the third consecutive year. Having won the competition with his opening vault of 4.20M, he went on to clear 4.86M, before attempting a new lifetime best of 4.93M. Not far behind him was Chalk Hills Hannah Foster, who established a commanding lead in the Inter Girls 300M and held on to take the gold in a superb time of 39.10 seconds. Jazz Sears from Lea Manor High School was involved in a close tussle for the Inter Girls Triple Jump medals throughout the six rounds of the competition. Only after the final jump was she sure that her 1st round 11.92M was enough to take the silver.

Frankie, Hannah and Jazz were further delighted to secure selection to represent England Schools in the Home Countries International against Scotland, Ireland and Wales to be held in Dublin next weekend.

Raph Bouju (Mark Rutherford) almost joined them on the plane when he made a stunning improvement to his personal best time to finish 3rd in the Inter Boys 100m, having stopped the clock at 10.73 seconds. Twice a previous winner, team captain Ben Davies (Redborne) couldn’t quite make it three in a row. In a slow run race, he was beaten to the line by just over half a second and added a bronze medal to his collection.

Leonie Brunning (St Thomas More) and Kierra Grant (Stopsley High School) both excelled with performances close to the personal bests. Leonie taking 5th in the Junior Girls High Jump with 1.63Mand Kierra 6th in the Inter Girls Triple Jump with 11.30M.

Although only 4 athletes set personal best performances on the day, 6 equalled or bettered the ESAA entry standard, and 9 achieved the much higher ESAA National Standard.

Teamwise, Bedfordshire and Luton were 5th amongst Group C counties with the Inter Girls losing out on winning their trophy by a margin of only 2 points.

English Schools Combined Event Championships 2017

Dear Colleague and/or athlete

Bedfordshire and Luton Schools have had a proud record of success in English Schools Combined Event Championships, winning many medals, achieving high places, and several internationals
We would like to take both teams and individuals again this year (max 4 athletes per age group plus guests), and ask for nominations of athletes who you think would be appropriate.  They do not have to have previously participated in a Combined Event meeting before, but obviously need to be competent at a number of the events they will undertake, and have the potential to reach a good standard.   Please feel free to discuss any athlete with me prior to nominating them.

I must have nominations with the details requested overleaf, by 31 May at the latest, as my entries have to be received by ESAA, by 6th June, but please email any improved performances up to 9pm Sunday 4th June.
