History

"Three churches coming together with one heart and purpose"

In 20016 Our three churches, Border United, Cape Traverse United and Bedeque United thought, prayed and discerned where and how God was calling us to be and made the decision to amalgamate into one church family. We draw upon this moment of cooperation and our individual histories to empower us to be a living presence of love to the communities that we are part of, and to keep us open to where the spirit is calling us next.

Bedeque United Church

The beautiful United Church situated on the highway, which runs through the Village of Bedeque in  P.E.I., has an interesting history.  In the year 2007 this church has 119 years of history in the present building and 189  years when the first Weslely Chapel was built.  The origin of the Bedeque United Church may be traced to Nathanial Wright, a United Empire Loyalist who had been converted during mission services  in Tryon by an itinerant Methodist missionary from Nova Scotia.

Sometime later twenty persons, most of them probably members of the Wright Family, formed a Wesleyan Society which became the core of the Bedeque Church.  Services were held in Nathanial Wright's barn, not more than one hundred yards from the site of the present church building.

A Chapel was built in 1818 on a part of the land which now forms the Bedeque cemetery.  Thirty years later a larger church was built on the site occupied by the present United Church and it remained in use until the erection of today's building, the contractor for which was John McCallum.

"Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away."  Preached by Rev. E.C. Turner.

This was the sermon that got the new church started in 1887.  John McCallum a strong Presbyterian from Lower Bedeque was said to have had the most novel ideas on how to build, finish and pew a church.  The church 50 by 31 with a vestry of 30 by 24 was built for $3800.00.

In January 1888, the new church was dedicated.  The service marked by the tolling of a six hundred-pound bell, donated by Hon. Benjamin Rogers.  The organist and choir director, Mrs. Coling Wright, was responsible for the music.   The Minister of the church,  the Rev. E.C. Turner, assisted by the Rev. John Shenton and the Rev. C.W. Hamilton led the worship service.

Borden United Church

The first protestant church service was held in the schoolhouse on July 4, 1920 with services being conducted by Rev. Ewen MacDougall.

Services were held from time to time in the schoolhouse until 1924 when the Borden Union Hall was completed.

The first service in the Hall was by Rev. Mr. MacPherson.

During the Pastorate of Rev. Burton Crowe (1947-1953) the members felt it was time to have a real church for worship.

The building of a church began under the leadership of Rev. Crowe, as architect and a building committee of Maurice Lodge; Harold Coggins, Roland Ramsay & Stenning McNevin. The building was built and the church was opened and dedicated for worship on November 9, 1950.

The remaining debt of $5,000 was taken over by the Ladies Social Club, which was given ten years to pay off. The mortgage was burned on Sunday, June 10, 1956, more than five years before the final payment was due.

The 35th anniversary was held in 1985 and letters were read from Rev. Burton Crowe and Rev. Garth Cowper-Smith with Rev. Ranald Cameron as guest speaker.

The 40th anniversary was held in 1990 with Rev. Jack Spencer as guest speaker.

On November 9th, 2000 (the exact date) the church celebrated its 50th anniversary. With a project to commemorate this anniversary, new stained glass overlay windows which were purchased by members, in memory of loved ones, were installed. Rev. Barbara Wagner was our speaker with the dedication of the new windows.

A new kitchen and washroom were built in 2003 with the help of volunteer members. This has allowed thebasement of the church to host family fun nights with music and games.

The Borden Sunday School was successful in naming our Pastoral Charge Newsletter – naming it “Connector” – which displayed 3 large circles, for each congregation, for each congregation and the circles representing God’s endless love connected by 2 fish shaped crests of the United Church of Canada.

2010 Roof on west side shingled.

2012 New side door on church installed.

2014 Heat pump purchased for basement and new Sunday School room erected for joint services Jan., Feb. and March 2015. A new oil tank was installed, first congregational meeting with David Hewitt regarding the possible amalgamation of Bedeque Pastoral Charge.

Cape Traverse United Church

Photo taken by Eddie

The congregation of Cape Traverse originated in the home of George Muttart, the eldest son of Balthazar Muttart.  Georges' father, who had been with General Wolfe while scaling the Plains of Abraham in the capture of Quebec, was one of the earliest British settlers to arrive in Tryon around 1759.

George was brought up Roman Catholic but was converted along with his son, Charles in 1815 to Wesleyan Methodism and their home was opened to preaching and class meetings. Their desire (along  with several others) to build a church was made a reality in 1831.

Over the years the little chapel was renovated and a gallery added in 1864. As the old church outgrew its usefulness, Lewis Muttart and Alexander Strang were instrumental in having the present building constructed in 1889 on the land donated by Montague Muttart and in 1890 was dedicated to the Glory of God.
