Lushly, but simply told with the poetry of Martin Espada, the magic realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and the meticulous investigation of James Michener, Blanco weaves an intricate tale of love, race and history. Told through the eyes of various characters, and interlaced with folk tales about a latino "Simple Simon", "Juan Bobo", Caribe focuses on Puerto Rico's complex racial history as seen in the lineage of Rodriguez, a dark-skinned doctor and quiet revolutionary, and as the lives of the Cienfuegos, Figueroas, Moyas, Penas and the Arriesgos' mingle and interrelate.
Lauded for its "historical dimension, meticulous investigation and handling of characters," Caribe was the l995 winner of the 21st Annual Chicano/Latino Literary Contest at University of California, Irvine.

You can still see a lot of damage from last year's hurricane as you move around Cancun. It seems that the hotels run by large corporations (such as the Riu hotels where we stayed) all are back up to 100%, as if they were never damaged. But those places that are owned by small-time entrepreneurs have, in many cases, not been repaired at all. Case in point was this lot next to our hotel, which appeared to have been (at one time) very nice, but seems to have been abandoned and left to sit there unrepaired.

One thing that was a drawback to this hotel (albeit a slight one considering all the good points) is its location. The location itself is beautiful, but it is on the far end of the hotel zone, so whenever we took a tour during the day, we were inevitably the last ones to be dropped off in the evening.
