Ponte Vedra Beach: A History
Ponte Vedra Beach: A History
Shaped by a mix of cultures ranging from early Spanish settlers in the 1500s to invading golfers in the 1980s, Ponte Vedra Beach has a rich and unique history. Ponte Vedra was home to pre- Columbian natives, Timucuan Indian warriors, the Spanish who settled historic Diego, Scottish outlaws, Palm Valley moonshiners and the employees of the National Lead Company who created a nine-hole company golf course that would later become the world-famous Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. Further developed by visionary real estate investors, what was once a sleepy, twenty-eight-mile stretch of beach is now known as Money Magazine's Best Place to Live in Florida and is named among the top fifty places to live in the United States.

Young Lawyers raise $20K for Big Brothers Big Sisters

03/19/2007

from staff

The Young Lawyers Division of The Florida Bar and the Young Lawyers Section of the Jacksonville Bar Association teamed up to hold their annual Tee It Up charity golf tournament Thursday at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club’s Ocean Course. While the team of Troy K. Smith, Rene Fix, Bill Dahlenburg and Kevin Rorabaugh from Rogers Towers may have won the event with a low gross score of 61 in the scramble format, the real winner was this year’s recipient.

“We raised $20,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida,” said Katie Dearing, who is a member of the YLS board of governors and chaired the event. She’s also an attorney with Gavin, Liles, Costantino & George.

These pelicans spend the whole day flying up and down the beach. I was told that they eventually go blind from salt water hitting their eyes when they skim small fish from just below the surface.

Murder? In Ponte Vedra? (Dr. Mary Paul in Florida)
A group of citizens want to incorporate the community of Ponte Vedra, including Palm Valley. Dr. Mary Paul and others in Palm Valley are adamantly opposed. Many in Ponte Vedra, for financial reasons, do not want to incorporate. They join together to try to defeat the referendum in September.
The local county commissioner, who actively supports incorporation, decides not to run for office again. Dr. Paul is encouraged to run for the seat at her boat parade party. Shortly after the party, one of the guests who had committed to work against incorporation is found dead in her pool on the ocean front.
The woman's husband had been killed in London a year earlier. She willed her estate in Ponte Vedra to St. John's charities to be administered by Dr. Paul, who arranges an estate sale of her belongings. The woman's homes in London and New York are broken into and files searched, but nothing else is disturbed.
The plot revolves around the investigation into the woman's death, the estate sale, and who may have been involved in the husband's death. Who is looking for the husbands papers? What is in the papers? The beauty of the Intracoastal Waterway and the oceanside community of Ponte Vedra make a wonderful setting for this fast-paced Florida novel.
