The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging
Astonishing as it may be, it’s a fact that human DNA has evolved very little since our Paleolithic
ancestors roamed the earth. But while our genes may be similar, the environment in which they express themselves has changed radically. Living in an age when activity was mandatory and food was scarce, our ancestors thrived. Early man did not suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, or obesity. In fact, a good deal of what we describe as “normal aging” is more akin to disease than any natural aging process.

Disease free and strikingly fit, 72-year-old Arthur De Vany—grandfather of the “Paleo lifestyle”
movement—is living proof that it pays to live like a caveman. In The New Evolution Diet, De Vany
offers you a roadmap back to better health. The plan is built on three principles:
- eat three meals a day made up of nonstarchy vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins
- skip meals occasionally to promote a low fasting blood insulin level
- exercise less, not more, in shorter, high-intensity bursts

By cutting out modern foods—including carbohydrates, dairy, and all processed foods—anyone can
lose weight, gain muscle, and enjoy a longer, better life.

thirty one It's been almost a month since I talked about my weight loss progress. I just wanted to check in to let you know I am not off the wagon. Quite the opposite. I came to realize that none of my clothes fit anymore, I have lost that much weight. Even some of the replacement jeans I bought when I first lost enough weight to drop a size are now too big. My waist is now a full 4+ inches smaller than it was a few months ago. Also, my tops were starting to look like giant bags on me so I had to replace them as well. Over the past couple of weeks I have practically purchased an entire new wardrobe. The reason I feel safe doing it now is because I just don't think I can lose that much more. I am now only about 15 lbs heavier than when I finished high school and I was a string bean in high school and I would never want to lose the muscle mass I have gained since then anyway. When I first started losing weight I thought I had three big obstacles in my way. 1) My trip to my parents in the fall. 2) My vacation to China, eating out in restaurants for 2 weeks. 3) Christmas. I lost weight while visiting my parents. I lost weight while traveling in China. I lost weight during Christmas! It's not like I was being that careful during Christmas either. I had two big Christmas dinners with seconds on the desserts. I ate plenty of chocolates during the Holidays including an entire box of toffifee by myself! On Jan 1st when I weighed myself I was at a new low weight. WTH? It was weird trying on clothes these past two weeks. I'm wearing a size of pants I have not seen since probably first year University 15 years ago. I was trying on tops this weekend and half the mediums were too big. WTF? I suspect some feel good sizing there because if I'm a small what the heck do small people wear? I don't think anybody would call me small. Oh, the top I'm wearing in this photo is one of those small ones. It's actually still pretty loose. Anyway, I bought a lot of casual clothes because this is pretty typical of me. I wear clothes like this to work and around the house. I'm a casual kind of guy. I don't normally do New Year's resolutions but my main goal for this year will be to stay at my new healthy weight. I don't expect it to be difficult because oddly enough I didn't find losing the weight that difficult, maintaining it should be even easier. I still have a cold and didn't feel like putting too much effort into a photo today...
Numbers Don't Lie Day 9/365
Numbers Don't Lie Day 9/365
I have noticed lately that my clothes are getting too tight. At first I tried to blame it on my new dryer. Which really is ridiculous considering it has a sensor and stops when the clothes are dry. But anyone who has ever gained weight understands how you will try to justify that extra snuggness (is that even a word?) in your waistband. I haven't been on scales in several months. It's actually been so long that I don't remember when the last time I got on them was. Taking this shot was the first time I have actually seen the numbers to go along with the pinching clothing. Maybe it's just because I'm a math person, but the numbers really get to me. I don't think I have ever been this large. Maybe when I went into labor, but even then I don't think so. I have struggled with weight-loss most of my adult life. In the last few years it has been a battle I have only fought in small burst. I'm always too busy to eat healthy or work out. I'm always going to start on Monday. Even when I do start, I will last a few weeks then fall off the wagon. The weight doesn't come off as easy as it used to. Not that it has ever been easy for me, but it was easier in my twenty's. I have to do something about this now. I have friends actually say to me that I'm fine the way I am. They are slender people. They don't know how it feels to try on clothes and nothing fits right. I also have to do it for my daughter who has already developed my bad eating habits. I don't want her to have to deal with this her entire life. When I decided to take this shot for my 365, my intention was to blur out the numbers. But maybe showing my weight to the world will push me into doing something about it.
