BEATLES' RECORDS AUSTRALIA

compiled by Bruce Hamlin.

In compiling this book, I have used my own extensive collection of Beatles records from Australia,

as well as those of several of my friends.

Every song has been individually timed with a stop-watch on a belt-drive turntable. There could be up to one

second variation to other peoples timings. Apart from the section on singles and EP's I have not included the

label times, after seeing the variation between label and actual times it will be evident that record companies

never check the times of the songs. I have listed all combinations of sleeves, labels and styles of writing that

I have been able to locate. So there probably are some that I have missed, but as this is the first time a book

of this sort has been attempted in Australia I feel sure that most people will understand the problems of even

starting a work as comprehensive as this. I would like to thank, John, Paul, George,Ringo, EMI, Polygram,

Festival, Arno, Art, brad, Francis, George Martin (for remixing almost every song at least twice),Bill and all

the others who have either inspired or helped me with this work. And lastly to my wife and children for

putting up with me.

This book is broken into 4 different sections. The first is Australian Singles. As with the next two sections,

it lists Australian releases in their order of release, plus different reissues (where known) in their correct

order as well. The dates are either official record company release dates, or the first known day the record

was available in the shops. For convenience sake I have also shown if the records are deleted or not.

In many cases a deleted record will appear later in the list in a slightly different form, so if checking for

a current release it is best to start from the back of each section.

Included are any records imported by a major record company and made available through normal outlets.

Not records specially ordered for a record shop to be imported by the record company as this would include

almost every Beatles record issued anywhere in the world. But all records in this book have been made

available through normal outlets at some time or another.

The extended playing albums section is almost the same format as the singles as it also lists the label as

well as actual times of each song. With the 1979 reissue series, many may query the the information

provided but I can assure you it is accurate as I have checked it with EMI.

With the albums section I didn't show the label times, mainly because there just wasn't enough room for two

sets of times on each page. In all cases I have shown the matrix numbers and have tried to give as much

information about each record as possible, hopefully without being too boring. Anyone wishing to query the

details or to provide me with corrections or additional information is welcome to write to me at the address

on the previous page.

Bruce.

Promotional radio station record only. Although No's 44, 46 and 49 are the only

ones listed (because they are the only ones that I have located) but EMI says that

during the 60's they would do about 300 promo's for each single. Just put the special

labels on the machine and when they were used up the normal labels would go through.

So there are probably promo copies of most Beatles' singles but as I said these 3

are the only ones that I have seen.

Set. Pepper may mean something entirely different to the children of the Seventies, but they already know, as we learned eleven years ago, that this LP is far from just another record.

There may be others in this series out so far I have been unable to locate

During November/December 1978, EMI deleted all (not just the Beatles)

EP's without warning. In late September 1979 the 70000 series of Beatles' EP's

were made available again. The main difference externally was the rear of the

sleeves, which now had just the Parlophone logo located centrally at the bottom

instead of both EMI and Parlophone logos. The copyright writing on the sleeve

is also different. The labels have also been reprinted, before the copyright on

self-compositions had been Leeds Music, then Northern Songs it is now ATV

Northern Songs. At the same time 2 of the previous series (probably some old stock)

were also issued but were quickly deleted Label design was similar to previous

issue with no logo, Catalogue and matrix number on left side of hole.

Numbers 58 to 67 were all re–mastered in June 1979 but only 65 to 67

used original master tapes in mono. 58 to 64 used new masters taken

from stereo album tapes. This accounts for the variation in times and

sound of these records plus the fact that 5 songs actually survived

in stereo records.

Late in 1980 some of these records started to appear with no anti–skid

ribbing around the edge of the label.

Of these I have located the following.

DELETED

These last two of the UK mono albums imported by EMI arrived

later than the rest of the set. It appears that A COLLECTION CF BEATLES OLDIES

was either not manufactured in the reissue series or Australia did not import it.

All are now deleted in Australia but as with any EMI catalogue worldwide

these albums while still available in England may be specially imported by EMI

for local record shops if they can order enough import titles from the country

in question to make up a full order from the one country.

INDEX

Includes song titles, versions of each title, catalogue number and title of each

record the song appears on. Albums and extended plays are in clock writing,

singles are in small writing. If the version of the song is mastered on the record

in mono this is also noted, otherwise the song is in stereo unless fake stereo is noted.

There are many differences that have occurred since the 1976 singles and

1979 extended plays reissues. These have all been confirmed from either the

EMI master tapes or from EMI documentation.

A FEW VERY LATE AMENDMENTS

PCSO 7533 THE BEATLES' GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1

correct release date is 22 February 1968.

PMCO 7533 THE BEATLES' GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1

was released in mono in August 1966

(I don't have the exact date available yet)

As stated in the albums section these 2 albums were made from the same master tape

(with the exception of She Loves You. The original master tape was made up for the mono

album but all titles except She Loves You and I'll Get You used for the mono album were stereo

or fake stereo versions of the songs. When EMI came to cut the stereo album 1 months later

they substituted a fake stereo version of She Loves You, but left I'll Get You in mono on the tape.

GEPO 70013 REQUESTS

The songs on side 1 of this EP were sourced from the

American album The Beatles Second Album T2080.

But songs on side 2 came from the appropriate Australian mono albums.
