This website is designed to feature some of the educational strategies or materials that I have used in my career as a faculty member at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing (UNMC CON). I began working at the UNMC CON in 2005, as the project coordinator for the HEROES project (www.unmcheroes.org). I became the Program Director in 2018. We have generated important content over these years for diseases like Ebola and COVID used by organizations like the WHO and CDC.
My educational philosophy is based in reflective practice. I think the opportunity to apply your learning and reflect on your performance is critical to actions you will take the next time a situation presents itself. With several years in the sphere of emergency preparedness, this cycle of training and exercising is key to the phenomenal response teams we see today within hospitals, medical systems, volunteer organizations, and non-governmental organizations throughout the world. I believe these processes can be applied to all types of learners and should be applied in an interprofessional way.
A new opportunity to serve all of UNMC opened up for me in 2016. I was hired to be an Education Researcher for the newly founded UNMC Academy of Educators. This is an opportunity to help clinicians and healthcare educators to combine scholarship with their teaching and learning opportunities.
This portfolio will showcase my experience in educational design, implementation, and research scholarship. It is not meant to replace a well-structured curriculum vitae, but to enhance access to the materials I have produced or to better explain educational strategies that I use. I will divide the site into major subheadings so that it is easy to navigate to certain types of learning materials that I have used. I will do my best to add images and examples when appropriate. If the actual learning videos or modules have not outdated, I will do my best to provide actual links to them.
I look forward to building this site and sharing some of my educational pursuits with all of you. I am forever grateful to all of the members of the HEROES team and our partners over the years that have made us successful in helping the world be a little more prepared.
Sincerely,
