Flame Descend on Shetland

posted 29 Mar 2017, 11:55 by Beacon Volleyball Club

On the 25th of March Beacon Flame mens team made the short trip to Sumburgh Airport to face Shetland and the University of Edinburgh as part of their Scottish Volleyball League 2 fixtures. The squad featured Ally, Smithy, JJ, Tom, Olivier, Ernie and Pawel who all got up early for the 7am flight from Aberdeen. Although the flight was delayed the team landed safely at a rather blustery Sumburgh.

After getting picked up by our very helpful hosts we travelled up to Lerwick for a rather nice breakfast at a local café. The team were then ready for the first match against University of Edinburgh who were positioned second in the league. The University had a stronger squad since the teams last faced off and on paper they were the favourites. However, Flame chose to ignore this and went on to play some of their best volleyball of the season. Solid passing from everyone combined with great setting from JJ or Ernie created repeated opportunities for the attackers to score. Although Flame were lacking a little fire power they used an array of shots to move the opposition defence about and find spaces on the floor. Lots of spectacular pick ups and tough serving also helped contribute to a fine 3:1 win. The University players perhaps hadn’t quite recovered from the overnight crossing on the ferry (it was a little bumpy!).

It was then straight on to the next match against Shetland with very little rest. This perhaps contributed to a very slow start with Shetland taking full advantage with strings of tough serving and powerful attacks. Loads of mistakes by Flame made it impossible to get any momentum. At 2 sets behind and 22:24 down in the 3rd set it looked all over. But up stepped Olivier to float a series of serves across which unsettled Shetland allowing Flame back into the set. After some tense moments the team went on to get the 2 clear points required. Flame were now up for the challenge and upped their play to equal the match at 2:2 and set up the 5th set decider. Unfortunately for Flame a bad start and a return to form by Shetland opened up an early gap, which was never closed. Shetland went on to win the 5th and final set. Well done Shetland.

After that we officiated a very close game between Shetland and University of Edinburgh, which was also a 5 setter. The University guys manging to come out on top on that one. So a win for each of the teams on the day.

After a quick check in at the excellent Isleburgh House Hostel it was out to dinner with the Shetland squad. Followed by a get together with all three teams for some darts, pool and volleyball chat. An excellent end to the day.

The next day there was another breakfast at our new favourite cafe followed by helping with officiating of another match between Shetland and Edinburgh University. There was still some time for a visit to Clickimin Broch and the Shetland Museum to add a bit of culture to the visit. The evening flight home coincided with a beautiful sunset over a cloud covered Shetland.

All in all a great weekend which included some decent results, food, culture, laughs and  beautiful scenery. Definitely one to be repeated next season. Special thanks to our hosts Shetland VC who went out of their way to make our weekend fun and hassle free.
