Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters
Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters
Silver Screens traces the rich history of Milwaukee's movie theaters, from 1890s nickelodeons to the grand palaces of the Roaring Twenties to the shopping mall outlets of today. And the story doesn't end there: in the past two decades, the revival of interest in preservation and restoration of theaters has confirmed that there's still life in these beloved old structures. With the publication of Silver Screens, authors Larry Widen and Judi Anderson help ensure that our old theaters, those being restored and those long since vanished, will remain forever embedded in our collective memory.
In this revised edition of their book Milwaukee Movie Palaces, the authors present new findings on film innovations, drive-in theaters, projection booths, movie promotions, noted theater personalities, recent restoration efforts, and much more. Illuminated with more than a hundred photographs, including many never before published, Silver Screens is a stunning tribute to the legacy of the movie theater.

panorama Tuschinski movie theater
© John Melskens - All rights reserved Pathe Tuschinski is a movie theater in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, originally exploited by Abraham Icek Tuschinski, who had it built in 1921 at a cost of 4 million guilders, in a spectacular mix of styles, as designed by Hijman Louis de Jong; Amsterdam School, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The main auditorium is usually the one in which movies premiere in the Netherlands. The facade, in its own style of Art Deco with oriental influences, was designed to help people get a feeling that they were being led into an illusion. The main auditorium was originally not designed just as a movie theatre and still has a stage and organ, on which performances are still given. The theatre was not only special in terms of architecture and decoration, but also electrotechnically, with revolutionary heating and ventilation, which kept the temperature even throughout the building. During the Second World War (1940-1945) the theatre was given the (non-Jewish) name 'Tivoli'. From 1998 to 2002 the whole theatre was renovated in its original style. At this time it was also expanded, with a new modern looking wing that is connected to the old building via a corridor. The new wing added 3 extra auditoria to the theatre.

Village Theatre Ornamentation
The Village, built as the Germania in 1916 but changed to the Parkside after the US entry into the First World War when anti-German sentiment was running high, has been closed since March 2007. The theater later went through a couple of other name changes over the years including the Gold Coast and the Globe. The theater is located on Clark Street at Germania Place in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago. Prior to being divided into four small auditoriums in the early 90s, the theater could seat 900. Little remains of the original interior design, but the facade, despite being almost entirely hidden behind an ugly modern marquee, is still intact and features red brick and beige terra-cotta highlights. Since it has been closed for nearly two years, the site will most likely be demolished for redevelopment.
