Hotel Lobby The Empire Hotel 44 West 63rd Street New York, NY 10023 The Empire Hotel opened in 1890. Situated where Broadway and Columbus Avenue intersect at 63rd Street, it was acquired in 1999, when it was known as the Radisson Empire Hotel, by Ian Schrager in a deal that also included the Barbizon Hotel. Schrager sold the hotel to the Chetrit Group that planned to convert the hotel to 125 condominiums. With condo sales in recession the Chetrit Group decided to renovate the hotel across from Lincoln Center as a 440-room upscale hotel. Amsterdam Hospitality Group and the Chetrit Group completed a $50-million renovation of the entire 413-room property in 2007. Not renovated is the hotel’s glowing red sign, which has stood since 1923 as one of the longest standing neon billboards in the US. The Empire Hotel scored a marketing hit in 2010 as backdrop for TV show 'Gossip Girl.'
