Glencoe, A Romance of Scotland
(Scottish Historical) In the aftermath of the 17th century massacre that rocked Scotland with its infamy, two clans embodied the essence of rivalry and revenge. Niall MacDonald was a chieftain by default, driven to atone for his failed duty. Meg Campbell was his hostage held for ransom against the ambition of a clan. They were fated to be rivals, but destined to be lovers. Captive to their respective family loyalties, Meg and Niall must resolve the battle within their hearts as they unwillingly fall in love amid the last snows of a bitter Highland winter.86% (5)
Glen Etive and Loch Etive from Buachaille Etive Beag.
A postponed trip down to Leeds this week gave me the opportunity to finally kick start my Munro project with an overnight stay near the summit of Stob Dubh ( Buachaille Etive Beag) high above Glencoe. Shortly after announcing my intention to start this long term mission earlier in the year I badly sprained my right ankle ( a recurring injury first gained in a fall descending Buachaille Etive Mor back in 2001). So I have given the ankle plenty of rest and only walk now with support bandages in the hope of avoiding further interruptions in my schedule. The delay has also given me more time to plan and organise my assault which should mean one or two nights on the hill every fortnight for the next eight to ten years to fully realise my dream. Having been in training now for some time the climb to the summit ridge with the 24kg pack took just under an hour. Having lost half a stone in the last month I feel I have at least the same amount to lose to reach my 'fighting weight' and am combining an hour cardiovascular per day with weight training. I feel the need to treat this as an athletic endeavour as much an artistic one and am therefore looking at nutrition to maximise performance too. The weight carried this time was broken down as follows; Lowepro Supertrekker backpack complete with side pouches and rear pack attached ( all extra webbing and fabrics cut away to lighten the load) 6.0kgs Shenhao TFC45 II 1.75kgs Schneider 90mm lens 0.2kgs Rodenstock 135mm 0.25kg Fujinon 300T 0.5kg 7x Double dark slides 1.33kg Box of spare film 0.11kg Pentax spot meter 0.25kg Lee RF75 system filters/loupe/cable etc 0.4kg Panasonic Lumix GF1 0.6kg Benro carbon fibre tripod w Manfrotto 410 head 3.6kg Terra Nova Solar tent 2.15kg Aztec 2 season sleeping bag 1.0 kg Thermarest Neoair 3/4 roll mat 0.24kg Paramo waterproof fleece/jacket and trousers 1.2 kg Spare clothes 0.5 kg Scarpa SL walking boots 1.9kg Food and 1 litre of water 1.6kg. I opted to use the Shen Hao rather than my Ebony 45su to save weight but this proved to be a mistake. The Ebony is far more stable and so much better made to be used out in extreme locations. Windshake and flimsy build quality, especially of the front standard made the Shen’s use very frustrating and meant a couple of missed opportunities. The lack of asymmetric tilt in fast changing light also meant that I missed a couple of perfect moments that the Ebony would have been ready for. Given the 1 kg difference in weight I shall take the 45su in future. I do however need to look at ways of lightening the load in future and shall post to keep you informed as I try out various options. For example, I can save 1kg by getting the latest Terra Nova tent, a further 600g by changing to fabric 3 season boots, at least 2kg by looking at backpacks rather than camera bags and of course 5kgs from around my waist! Any experience you guys have of super light weight walking gear would be welcome. I would be delighted to get my pack down to around 40 rather than the current 48lbs for the sake of my knees. Seven new LF images made this trip but this was from the Lumix.Glencoe
