Common Reading Experience 2019
What is a common reading experience? In our case, it is actually a video and a short story. We hope to foster community by creating connections among students, professors, staff and others through the shared experience of a thought-provoking idea.
The short story and video was chosen by a college committee to be experienced by all first year students. This “common reading” may be used at various times and in special programs outside of classes. Students’ professors, residence hall staff, librarians, and other members of the college community contribute ideas and actions that bring topics raised in the book to life. Because many Bloomfield College faculty members are leading researchers in their fields, they may often share information from their research with students.
Through this uniquely shared experience, the common reading introduces first year students to the:
- Value of research
- Power of ideas
- Various but interconnected ways in which disciplines across our academic institution approach similar issues and material.
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
Greeting and Welcome, Assoc. Prof. Librarian, Mark Jackson
“Welcome to the Bloomfield College Common Reading Experience! All of you are embarking on a journey that will lead to change and growth. The first step along this path is unique in the academic process. You will be sharing, with all of your fellow classmates, a story… a story of beauty, loss, conformity, and sadness. Many of you will have emotions that you will share with each other. Some of you will be challenged. Hopefully, you will begin to think of the everyday world in a different light. Moving from acceptance of the world as it is, to envisioning the world as it could be. The possibilities are endless, you just need to grab hold of them… “
