Social Work License Information

Reimbursement for Licensing Exam

As of April 30, 2008, current employees, including SSA staff, who meet the criteria listed below, may be reimbursed for the cost of taking the LCSW or LCSW-C licensure exam.  After that date, DHR will reimburse each individual for his/her first attempt.  The first reimbursement will be made regardless of whether the employee passes the exam. If the employee fails the exam and elects to try again, he/she will be reimbursed for the cost of one additional exam only upon the successful attempt. This means that an employee may only be reimbursed for a maximum of two exam fees regardless of how many attempts the employee makes, transfers to another DSS or SSA and/or leaves and returns to DHR service.  DHR will not retroactively reimburse testing fees.

If an employee has previously taken and failed the LCSW-C exam for which they have been reimbursed by DHR, that individual may only receive a subsequent reimbursement by DHR if he/she elects to take the LCSW exam.

In order to be eligible, an employee must:

ü  Meet the Maryland Board of Social Work   Examiners’ (BSWE) requirements to sit for the LCSW or LCSW-C exam;

ü  Be a DHR employee in good standing (PEP, attendance, etc.) who has passed his/her probationary period;

ü  Pay the fee, then submit proof of payment (receipted bill) according to local processes for reimbursement, and submit documentation as to whether the employee passed or failed the exam;

ü  Be willing to accept promotions/assignments at the supervisor level for which he/she becomes eligible upon licensure; and

ü  Sign a Service Agreement that requires one (1) year of service from the date of the most recent test result for which reimbursement was received.

If you have questions about this policy, please call Terry Chrapaty, HRDT Employment Services Manager, at 410-767-8806.
