Good afternoon,

Just a couple of quick things as we prepare to wrap up the year tomorrow.

- If your child was in Jazz Band this year, PLEASE make sure they have turned in their black Jazz, Inc. polo shirt. As of today, I am still missing 10 shirts. I need those ASAP.
- For 2014 Marching Band students who need shoes, make sure that I get a shoe size & $20 so that I can order them over the summer. 
- All instruments that are student-owned (or if you are renting from Quinlan & Fabish) must go home over the summer. I will not be here much over the next 6 weeks, and I don't want to come back and find instruments missing. If your student uses a school-owned instrument, they may check it out with me before they leave or leave it here at school.

To the parents of the 2014 seniors, thank you for all your contributions to bring this program to where it is today. It could not have been done without you. Our band numbers continue to grow (almost 200 next year) and I'm looking forward to what we have coming in the future. For the incoming 7th graders, welcome to BC and I'm looking forward to making music here at the Jr. High! To everyone, thanks for a great year. I'm looking forward to what our students have to offer in 2014-2015.

Summer Band!

In case you haven’t seen the applications floating around, I’d like to invite you and your high school students to join the 2014 Purdue Summer Concert Band.  This band is open to Pur

due students, faculty, and staff, area high school band students, and pretty much anyone who lives or works in the greater Lafayette community.  Prof. Ishbah Cox and I will serve as the co-directors of this year’s group.  There is no base cost for participation; Purdue students are able to enroll for course credit at standard tuition rates, but are not obligated to do so.  There are no auditions for membership.


Rehearsals begin Tuesday, June 17, and we meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00-5:30 PM, through our concert date of Tuesday, July 15.  Rehearsals are held at the Elliott Hall of Music, Room 15.  We will not rehearse on Thursday, July 3 due to the Lafayette Citizens Band obligations that day.  The concert will be held on July 15, 7:00 PM at Slayter Hill on the Purdue campus.


The application form is attached, and can be mailed to the band office or sent via email to Pat Newton (  We hope that you and your students are interested in joining us this summer for a low-key, but highly enjoyable musical experience!

Good afternoon,

The popcorn from our fundraiser came in today. It will be ready to be picked up tomorrow. Students with a smaller order may take it home with them at the end of the school day. If it is a larger order, it may be picked up tomorrow before 5:30. All the orders are in the back of the band room in boxes. Please make arrangements for your student's order to be picked up before the end of this week. I will be here until 3:30 on Friday.

Just one more reminder about our concert this Sunday in the auditorium at BC! Students should arrive and be ready to play by 3:00PM. The concert will begin at 3:30PM with the 6th grade band first. Dress is casual, but please no ripped/holes in jeans and no hats. "Sunday best" is usually the term here.

This concert will feature the 6th, 7th, 8th, Jazz, & HS bands. We have a great concert lined up and I look forward to seeing you there!

Just a quick reminder about our concert coming up this Sunday (5/18) here at BC in the Auditorium. Students need to arrive by 3:00PM, concert will begin at 3:30. This will feature the 6th, 7th, 8th, Jazz, & HS bands. It will also be our last concert of the year! Invite family and friends! These students have worked very hard this year.

If your child is in Marching Band this fall, there will be a Marching Band orientation for students after school on May 19th (a week from today). It will last about an hour, and students may ride the activity bus home.

Good afternoon!

Just a reminder that Popcorn orders & money are due Thursday, May 1st. Please make any/all checks payable to the Benton Central Band Boosters.

Also a reminder that Marching Band forms are due a week from today. That night we will be having a parent meeting at 6PM here in the band room to discuss the upcoming season and the Disney trip in June 2015. There will be a representative from Music Travel Company to talk about the trip as well. Please mark your calendars!

I'm looking forward to our final concert of the year on Sunday May 18th. Show time is 3:30PM in the Auditorium.

Just a reminder that if your student(s) is planning to go to Kings Island on May 10th, the money for the trip is due tomorrow. I cannot accept any new forms at this point. If you are unable to get the money in tomorrow, please make arrangements with me. Otherwise, I will have to remove students from the list. Please make and checks out to 'Benton Central Band'.

Good afternoon!

A couple of updates on this beautiful Friday afternoon:

Today we began a new fundraiser for our program. We will be selling gourmet popcorn in 12 different flavors. Each student was given a brouchure and a sheet giving some details about the fundraiser. It goes from today until May 1st. Payments should be made when the order is placed. Once we have put in the order, it will take about 2 weeks to come. With this fundraiser we keep 50%! This is much better than many fundraiser which only offer 20-30%. If you have questions please contact Carrie Honn.

Kings Island forms are due to me on Monday. Money is due a week from today, Friday April 25. I cannot accept these late because I have to order our tickets within a certain amount of time so they will get here before we go. If your child wants to go but money will be an issue, please let me know and we can work something out.

Marching Band forms are now available for students in grades 8-11. These should be turned in by Monday, May 5th. Please mark your calendar for that night when we will be having our parent meeting to discuss the upcoming fall season & the Disney trip next June.

We are still looking for people who would be willing to be part of different committees or serve as Band Booster officers for next year. Please let me know if you'd be interested. We need parents of students from all grade
levels & different talents to help manage our organization. If you'd like information about what an officer position entails, please contact me.

I wanted to let everyone know that the forms for the 2014 Bison Marching Band were made available today. This year we are doing a show about dreams, appropriately titled, "Dream Bigger". I am excited to get this season going! We are building on the great success of last season and progressing to more great accomplishments!

I've attached the forms that will need to be turned in for Marching Band participation. I need these forms filled out and returned by Monday, May 5th (the sooner the better). On the evening of the 5th we will also have a parent meeting in the band room to discuss the upcoming season and our Disney trip. Students must be in Marching Band this fall to go on the trip.

Cost to participate in Marching Band is $40 (due the first day of Band Camp). However, I do not want money to be an issue for students to participate. If there is an issue paying this fee, please let me know. New Marchers will also need to purchase black marching shoes through me before school ends. Cost for those is $20. Please make those out in separate checks.

If your child is an incoming Freshman and is unsure about Marching Band, I would highly encourage them to give it a try. If your child is a Freshman currently, I would encourage them to continue because it is much easier in the second year. If your child is a fall athlete, no problem! The Marching Band does not practice every day, and I have deliberately scheduled our competitions around athletic events. This is a great experience and I would love to see everyone take part!

Congratulations to the Benton Central Concert Band on their silver rating at contest!  The whole band sounded fantastic!  They missed the gold by just 1/2 point from a very tough panel of judges.

The concert band will be going to Jeff High School tomorrow evening for ISSMA contest. They will perform at 5:30. Anyone is welcome to come and support our concert band. Goodluck at your performance!!

As we've done the last couple of the years, the BC Bands will be going was to Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason, Ohio! I have always felt that music travel is an essential part of the total band experience, and all of the band students have certainly earned it over the course of the year.

Here are a few of the details as I have them right now:
- It is open to any band student in grades 7-12.
- This is a completely voluntary trip. No student is required to attend.
- We will be going to Kings Island on Saturday, May 10th.
- We will meet at BC and take a school bus (or buses, depending on the number of people).
- We will leave at around 6:30AM and return at about 9:30-10:00PM that night.
- Costs: $40 ($31 for the ticket, $9 toward buses). If students would like to purchase a fast pass, they are an additional $70 (they've gone WAY up this year).
- We will need several parent chaperones to go with us. We will need one parent for every 4-6 students. If you'd like to chaperone, please let me know. Parent chaperones will need to purchase their own tickets through the group rate.
- If your child would like to go, but finances are a concern, please let me know and we will work something out.
- There will not be a performance facet to this trip, it is for the students' enjoyment.
Permission forms are due no later than April 21st, and all money is due April 25th. Late forms will not be accepted.

Good afternoon,

I hope your student(s) are ready for that final push to the end of the year. It certainly has been a busy year for our band program, and I want to thank you for all your support & help to make these opportunities happen.

Here are a few updates:

On Tuesday
(4/1), the HS band has a clinic with Ishbah Cox, Asst. Professor of Bands at Purdue in preparation for ISSMA contest. It will go from 5-7PM in the band room. This date has been on the calendar since the beginning of the year. Spring athletes should go to practice and make arrangements with their coaches to be ready for rehearsal at 5PM. If there are issues with this, please contact me.

Our ISSMA HS contest date is on Friday April 11th @ Lafayette Jefferson HS. An itinerary will be handed out to students tomorrow. We perform at 5:30PM in the theater at Jeff. Everyone is welcome to come hear us, and there is no cost to get in! This is a required performance for all HS band students and will count as a performance grade.

Our final concert of the year will be on Sunday, May 18th in the auditorium. Call time is 3:00PM. It will feature all bands (6th, 7th, 8th, HS, Jazz). Awards will be given as well.  Concert will begin at 3:30pm.

Remember that all current HS band members (minus seniors) are required to be present for Graduation on June 1st. This will be our final performance of the '13-'14 school year.

Preparations for the 2014 Marching Band season are being made. Registration forms will be made available on Monday April 14th. Remember all HS band students are expected to march unless they have a major conflict in the fall. If your student is not planning on marching, they should speak with me soon. It's going to be a great season! There will be a Marching Band parent meeting on Monday May 5th at 6PM in the Band Room. We will also be discussing details of the Disney trip in June 2015. 

It's the time of year again where we are seeking officers for the Band Booster organization in the '14-'15 school year. It takes a lot of behind the scenes work to make our band program run, and I cannot do it alone. We need all types of talents and parents from all levels (6th grade-12th grade) to make it work. Also, you do not have to be an officer to be involved. Please contact me if you would like to be involved as an officer or as part of a committee (uniforms, food, etc.) We need your help to keep this program running and growing!

Tomorrow the Jazz Band will be going out to do 3 recruiting concerts for our elementary school students. They should wear their Jazz polos and jeans. We will feed them Pizza King when we arrive at Otterbein Elementary. If they don't want Pizza they should bring their own lunch. Tomorrow's schedule will look like this:

8:30 - Leave
BC for Boswell
9:15 - Perform for Boswell students
10:30 - Leave for Otterbein
11:15 - Eat Lunch
12:50 - Perform for Otterbein students
1:40 - Leave for Prairie Crossing
2:00 - Perform for PC students
2:50 - Arrive back at BC

They should come directly to the Band Room when they arrive at school tomorrow. Thank you!

I received our times for ISSMA contest in April today. In order to avoid the largest number of conflicts (ACTs, Golf Match, Softball Game), I requested that we go on Friday evening (April 11th) instead. That request was granted, so our ISSMA performance at Lafayette Jeff HS will be Friday April 11th at 5:30PM. Students should stay after school that day and we will leave BC by 4:00PM. Spring sports students should not go to practice that day.

2) I need the attached permission slip signed and returned from everyone. No exceptions. If I don’t have the permission slip, you don’t go to contest. I need EVERYONE on this.

3) Everybody is to ride the bus to Jefferson HS with the band. If you are not planning on coming back to BC on the bus with the group, I MUST have a SIGNED note from your parent saying who you are leaving with. No exceptions.

4) No matter what happens today, know that I am proud of you and the work that we have accomplished this year. You are a great group of students to work with, and you should let your talents shine at this performance.

We will meet from 3:15-5:15 and will have a guest clinician from Indiana State to work with the Jazz Band. It's important that everyone who can be present is there.

This Friday
is our final Pep Band game of the season. It is also senior night. We plan to celebrate our seniors as we have done in the past. Senior Pep Band members will be allowed to address the band if they choose, and the Band Boosters are providing cake for the group in honor of our seniors.

If your senior student walked for senior night during Marching Band, I am leaving it up to them and you whether they will walk again this Friday. If they do not wish to do so because they already did it in the fall, I am okay with that. If they do want to walk again, that is fine too. If your student did not participate in Marching Band, I want to make sure that they walk this Friday with the other seniors. If your student is going to walk on Friday, I must have the sheet back tomorrow at the latest. I also gave them a copy today.

Here is a slightly revised itinerary for ISSMA Jazz contest on March 8th. The only change is that our performance time got moved up by 15 minutes, so everything else before that has followed suit. All times listed on the itinerary are Eastern (Benton Co.) time.

I've gotten a couple of questions about the new digital make up days for Seniors. Per my conversation with Mr. Robb this morning, Seniors will be able to do their assignment at any point that weekend, so it's not something where they must be at their computer all day. The state is being very flexible with make up days so that our seniors may graduate on time. So, this will not affect senior participation in Jazz contest that day. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Here is some information about the last two games for Pep Band -

Tomorrow night, we will doing a road game to South Newton HS for the Boys vs. South Newton game. Here is our approximate itinerary - All times are BC (Eastern) Time:

4:00PM: Load Bus @ BC
4:20PM: Depart BC
4:50PM: Arrive @ SN
5:00PM: Rehearsal
6:00PM: JV Game begins
9:00PM (approx): Load Buses/Depart
9:30PM (approx): Arrive @ BC

Please have your students make sure they have taken care of eating for the evening. I am not sure if they will be feeding us. The band will be able to go the concession stand as needed.

Our last game will be FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28th. This is a change from the original schedule. Because of all the rescheduled games, senior night has been moved to Friday. We will NOT play Thursday night.

Good evening!
It's almost that time of year again! We are currently in the planning stages for the 2014 Bison Marching Band. I wanted to send out information regarding this ensemble in advance so that preparations can be made. It takes a lot to put on a successful marching season!
The Bison Marching Band is our most visible ensemble to the community. We perform in parades, contests, shows, and other events that will give the students a well-rounded experience. It also allows them to become a more close-knit group and will instantly make them better players. Whereas the concert bands may only perform for 400-500 people a year, our Marching Band is seen by thousands. It's a great experience that I urge every student to be part of!
The Marching Band functions as an extra-curricular ensemble. This means that performances will be an expectation for continued participation instead of earning classroom grades. High School Band students are expected to participate in the Marching Band unless they have a unique situation or fall sport that majorly conflicts. If your student is not planning on marching this fall, they need to speak with me ahead of time. Additionally, I reserve the ability to exclude students from Marching Band who have not demonstrated the attitudes/abilities needed to contribute positively to the ensemble. Students must be a part of band class to be in the Marching Band (the exception to this rule is the Color Guard).

Part of being in the Marching Band is Band Camp. All students in Marching Band must attend band camp. Last year we had great attendance and I know the students had a lot of fun. Band Camp is held annually at the end of July/early August.  We learn the majority of our show during this time and everyone must attend in order for it to be a success. We start later than many other bands to give the opportunity for students to enjoy their summer, go on vacation, attend summer camps, etc.

Our schedule is built to accommodate the Benton County Fair & summer sport practices. Please avoid scheduling family vacations, camps, etc. during these times if possible. 
If your student is in a fall sport, and also wishes to march, no problem! All of our coaches have been very willing to work with students in sharing time to make sure they can do both. I have also been assured that students will not be penalized in the form of not getting to play in a game because they are in Marching Band. If you believe transportation will be an issue, we have many parents who organized carpools last summer that helped many families.
Our Marching Band program is designed to give our students a positive experience that they will always remember. If your student will be a Freshman this fall, I highly encourage them give it a try! It is truly an activity that you must be part of to fully understand. I am committed to making this something they will have fond memories of, as it was for me. If you have questions please feel free to contact me. There will be a parent meeting on Monday May 5th (6PM) to give an overview of our season.

Good evening!

This Friday, 2/7 we will be hosting a new event this year that we are calling the Jazz Cafe'. This event will feature the Jazz Band and a few ISSMA Solo & Ensemble events. We are hoping for a night of good desserts and great music! Tickets are $5 for an individual, $8 for a couple, and $10 for a family (4). A ticket entitles you to a dessert (pie, cookies) and a beverage (coffee, tea, lemonade, water). This should be a cool fundraiser for us! The event will be held in the cafeteria at Prairie Crossing Elementary. Tickets can be purchased from me or Kate Kintner.

Saturday 2/8
is ISSMA Solo & Ensemble contest at Harrison HS. The students who are involved have received their times and room numbers for performance. I would recommend arriving 30 minutes before the scheduled performance time to allow for time to find the room, etc. All wind players warm up in the auditorium, percussionists in the band room. Also, I wanted to mention that it is VERY unlikely that Solo & Ensemble will be cancelled due to weather. Since this event is run by ISSMA and is not a BC Bands event, I have no say as to whether it goes on or not. Please understand that it is ISSMA's policy that no refunds will be given if you decide that travel is too dangerous on Saturday. Hopefully it will be an non-issue.

Reminder that tomorrow night's Pep Band game is Alumni Night!  Call time is 5pm.

Good afternoon everyone.  I just want to remind everyone that the Jazz Cafe is next Friday, at Prairie Crossing , 7:00 p.m.   I want to apologize, we didn't get the tickets out to the students like we thought we would.  With the snow days and having trouble  getting the tickets printed.  Mr. Richardson and I have the tickets.   I know a few of you have spoken for some.  I will be at the game Friday and have them with  me.  You can also email me or Mr. Richardson if you need tickets or information.

Good evening!

The Jazz Band had a nice performance yesterday at Purdue Jazz Festival. It was a good showing and I'm so glad we had a nice-sized crowd. Thanks to those of you who came!

We have two after-school rehearsals left. The first will be Monday, February 3rd. The other will be Monday, March 3rd. These will be in preparation for the Jazz Cafe' (on 2/7) and ISSMA Jazz contest (on 3/8).

The Jazz Cafe' is a new event this year that will be held in the cafeteria at Prairie Crossing Elementary. The idea was to have an event that showcases the Jazz Band in the community. There will also be a few performances from solos and ensembles who are competing at ISSMA contest on February 8th at Harrison. Please contact Kate Kintner for tickets to the Jazz Cafe'.

Good morning parents,

Because of the weather that supposed to be coming in around 1-2PM, we are going to forgo the Purdue Jazz Band concert today at Noon. So, this will push our return time up to about 12:45PM. We will be departing Purdue at Noon (after eating lunch).

Sorry for the inconvenience. Just trying to make it easier for everyone to get home!

Jazz Festival Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the Jazz Band's performance at Purdue Jazz Festival! The students have been working very hard and I'm looking forward to a great show!

Parents are more than welcome to attend, and it is a free concert. We perform at 10AM in the Mallet theatre inside Pao Hall on Purdue's campus. It is located right behind St. Thomas Aquinas.

If the weather should turn particularly nasty, we will not attend the Purdue Jazz Band concert and come home right after our performance. However, I don't anticipate this being the case. I will watch closely.

Students should wear their Jazz Band polo shirt with black pants and black shoes.

2014 Purdue Jazz Festival Itinerary

I am getting a lot of questions about the donations and Jazz Cafe event so I thought I'd send responses to everyone and clarify some things. 

The Jazz Cafe will be on Friday, Feb. 7th  @  Prairie Crossing.  The concert starts at 7.

If you have a student in the Jazz band they can bring a dessert in by their call time for the concert.  We would appreciate everything else delivered by 5:30 @ Prairie Crossing.  Unfortunately, we cannot set up things until the after school program is over. 

We have the coffee and the cookies taken care of so far.

Thank you so much for every thing.  I think  this Concert  is going to be fun and  a huge  success.

Hello Band Parents! 

Here is the list I promised  for the donations that we are going to need  for the Jazz Cafe.

I am not exactly sure the exact amounts, so this is just a guessed
amount for now.  We may have to add more.

Monical's Flyer

On Tuesday, January 21st, Monical's Pizza in West Lafayette is sponsoring a community day for the Benton Central Bands. Just bring in the flyer (lunch or dinner, dine-in or carry-out) and 20% of your bill will go towards the band program! This is an easy way to help support our hard-working students!

Also, the money that we raise goes to support ALL of the band program offerings (there are 10 different ensembles included in the BC Band program). Sometimes the misconception happens where people think that all of the money goes to the Marching Band or the HS band. This is NOT the case. It goes to expenses incurred in all the different groups. Please help support our students!

Happy  New Year!!  I hope this weather has not gotten you all in too much  of a funk.  Mr. R sent  out flyers  out to every one  for our next fundraiser.  Community night at Monicals restaurant.  If any one needs  more flyers let me know.  You can print the  flyer out also.

 all day @ Monicals on the west side. 

The band department receives 20% of your bill.  Please help spread the word.  A very  fun way to spend family night and supporting the band programs.

Jazz Cafe/ Chamber Recital   -  Feb. 7th  Prairie Crossing @ 7  doors open  at 6:30  Tickets  are $5 for single $8 couple $10 family.   Included in the ticket price is enjoying fantastic  solos/ ensembles fro out students and the Jazz band. also including is a slice  of pie, coffee or tea.  We will also have water, lemonade and cookies for ones that  don't like pie.  Please help spread the word out. The Jazz students will be coming home with tickets to sell.

Hello all,

I just wanted to provide you with some updates since school was cancelled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Pep Band
 - There is NO game on Friday night. I had an old schedule with a game still on that date. I am working on a possible road trip game to South Newton in February to make up for it. More details to come.

Jazz Band
 - I've attached the itinerary for next Saturday's Purdue Jazz Festival performance. I've also attached the permission form that will cover all Jazz Band trips. I would like to have it back by next Wednesday, the 15th.

2014 Purdue Jazz Festival
Saturday, January 18th

8:00AM - Arrive at BC, Door 11

8:15AM – Leave for Purdue

9:00AM – Arrive at Purdue. We will check in and take our stuff to the homeroom.

9:30AM – Move to Warm Up

9:38PM – Warm Up

10:00AM – Performance!

10:30PM – Performance ends. We’ll go ahead and load everything back on the bus.

11:00AM – Go to memorial union for early lunch

12:00PM – Go watch Purdue Jazz Band concert in Loeb

1:15PM – Load Bus

1:30PM – Depart for BC.

2:15PM – Arrive at BC. You will be released to go when everything is put away.

Please note: Every effort will be made to stick to this itinerary. Please be on time arriving at school as it will allow the day to run much more smoothly. A couple of the times are estimates because it largely depends on how long the game runs.

Eating: You may eat before you come, or bring money to eat at the memorial union.

Dress: All Black with Jazz, Inc. polo shirt.

 - In my last e-mail, I incorrectly stated that the next general booster meeting for all parents was Thursday the 13th of February. It is actually February 6th at 7PM in the band room. Sorry for that mistake on my part.

Winter Percussion
 - As of now the practices for Thursday and Saturday are still on. Will update if something changes.

Winter Guard
 - Since school is cancelled for Wednesday, the Winter Guard will not practice. Also, some have been asking about the location for practices. I am on the hunt for a gym for the guard to practice in. As you can imagine, this time of the year it is a bit difficult. I will let you know when a location is solidified. Until then, the practice location will still be at BC.

Monical's Pizza: BC Bands Day
 - On Tuesday, January 21st, Monical's Pizza in West Lafayette (the one at the corner of he new 231 & 52) is sponsoring a community day for the Benton Central Bands. On that day, you can go to Monical's and eat lunch or dinner (dine-in or carry out), present the flyer (attached to this e-mail) and 20% of your bill will go to our band program (alcohol & tax excluded). This is a cool fundraiser that is a great way to raise money for our growing program. My wife and I know what dinner plans will be that night!

Hello and Happy New Year!

We had a great first semester with all the BC Bands. With two great concerts, a wonderful marching season, strong showings by the Pep Band, productive Jazz Band rehearsals, and a fun musical, it's been a quite a semester!

Here are a few reminders as we prepare to start semester 2:

Pep Band - Check out the calendar for the remaining games on our schedule. Please note that alumni night is now Friday January 31st & 7th grade night is Thursday February 13th.

1/10 (Friday) – Girls BB vs. Gary West

1/28 (Tuesday) – Girls BB vs. Central Catholic

1/31 (Friday) – Boys BB vs. Seeger (alumni night)

2/4 (Tuesday) – Girls BB vs. Harrison

2/13 (Thursday) – Boys BB vs. Rensselaer (7th grade night)

2/21 (Friday) – Boys BB vs. South Newton (possible road trip game)

2/27 (Thursday) – Boys BB vs. Attica (senior night)

Call time for every game is 5:00PM.

Jazz Band
 - Remember that Purdue Jazz Festival is Saturday January 18th. An itinerary will be handed out on Tuesday when we get back from break. Our next event after this will be the Jazz Cafe' at Prairie Crossing on Friday, February 7th.

ISSMA Solo & Ensemble
 - If your child is participating in Solo & Ensemble, please encourage them to continue practicing. I don't give time during class for them to work on their pieces, so most of the work will need to be done at home. I am available after school any day except Wednesday to work with them on their music if they would like. A reminder that Solo & Ensemble is Saturday, February 8th @ Harrison HS in West Lafayette.

Jr. High Bands - 7th & 8th grade students will be participating in ISSMA Jr. High contest on Saturday, March 15th @ Clinton Prairie HS. This performance is counted as grade, same as a concert. Please mark your calendars now! We also will be giving a concert at BC on Monday, March 17th along with the 6th grade band.

Band Boosters
 - Our next general band booster meeting is Thursday February 13th @ 7PM in the band room. We need all types of talents to help make our band program successful. All the things that our students do would not be possible without the help of you, the parents. Parents of students in any grade are welcomed! Please plan to attend our booster meetings! This is a great way to get involved in your child's education and to stay informed about what's happening in our band program. If you can help out, please contact Kate Kintner. (

Winter Guard/Winter Percussion
 - If your child is involved in Winter Guard or Percussion, please follow their calendars for notification of performances & practices. There will be no game at BC tonight due to the weather. Therefore, Percussion Ensemble Rehearsal & the Pep Band performance are cancelled. We will try to reschedule alumni night for another date.

A couple of reminders really quickly:

-7th, 8th, HS - All fundraiser monies are due no later than Friday. I really would like to have this wrapped up and done before we leave for Winter Break. If there is an issue getting this in by Friday, please let me know.

-Pep Band - We have a game tomorrow night (Girls vs. WL). Call time is 5PM. Please make sure your student has their Pep Band shirt and has made arrangements to eat. We also have a game on Saturday (Boys vs. Covington) and is our annual alumni night! Please let any/all band alumni know! They are welcome to come play or to just enjoy the game. Call time is 5PM for this as well.

On Pep band nights, we are opening up a computer lab (monitored by a parent) so that students who wish to have a quiet place to do homework before games may do so. They should NOT be wandering around the building.

-7th, 8th, HS - Our Winter Concert is Monday, December 16th (this Monday) at 7PM. Arrival time for all band students is 6:30PM.

Good Morning.  I know  this is a very busy time of  the year, so I wanted to let you know about our next fundraiser s we  can mark our calendars. 

Monicals fundraiser is set for January 21st at the West Lafayette Monicals.   We will send out flyers when we receive them and there also will be a pdf version that we can email to everyone we know.    As far as I know, you have to have the flier for us to get credit and it is eat in only. It lasts all day, so anyone that wants to go to lunch could use it as well. I will let you know  if I hear anything else and will get you copies of the flier as soon as I get it.

Feb. 7th Is the Jazz Cafe.  We will be getting more infomation  out in Jan. Be on the look out for the email  for food and set up and tear down.

As we get into this Thanksgiving week, I wanted to send out a few updates as to what's going on in BC band world.

7th, 8th, HS - Our Holiday concert is Monday December 16th at 7PM in the auditorium. It will feature the 7th grade, 8th grade, & High School bands. The concert as a whole shouldn't last more than 45 minutes - 1 hour. Come enjoy some great sounds of the season!

7th, 8th, HS - Any student wishing to participate in ISSMA Solo & Ensemble contest needs to have their form in to me by Wednesday with the fee. Soloists are $13 and ensembles are $7 per member (checks made out to BC Bands). This is an excellent opportunity for students to improve on their instruments and get some valuable feedback from judges who are specialists on their instrument. Plus, it looks great on a scholarship/leadership/college application! The contest is held at Harrison HS and will take place on February 8th.

Pep Band - Our next game is on Thursday, December 12th (call 5:00PM), then our last game of the semester is Saturday, December 14th (call 5PM). We are also designating the 14th as band alumni night. Any alums are invited to come play with the band or to just enjoy the game!

7th, 8th, HS - Delivery for fundraiser items will be on Tuesday December 3rd. Monies will be due Friday December 13th. I know this was not the original date of delivery, but the company pushed our date back by two weeks. Unfortunately, I had no say in the matter. I apologize for any inconvenience. The Band Boosters are trying to put together a schedule for the remainder of this year and next school year so that all parents will be more informed of what our fundraisers are and when they are being held. If you would like to be involved with this process, please contact me or one of the Band Booster officers.

As we are in the Thanksgiving season, I wanted to say that I am thankful for the opportunity to teach your children each day. They are a great group of young people and I am glad for them as well. Thank you for the chance to teach your children through music.

Nov 21st minutes - Band Parent Meeting

Jazz Band - Jazz band performs in several events this year. They practice every Monday after school and every Friday during activity period. This is for the 8-12 grade students. We have 30 members this year.
  • Purdue Jazz fest – Jan. 18th @ 10 a.m. Powell Hall. This is a free event. West Side to follow.
  • Jazz Café – Feb. 7th Prairie Crossing
  • ISSMA Jazz contest – March 8th La Porte, Indiana. Time TBA.
  • Elementary Recruiting – March, 2014
Pep Band - The first pep band performance was fantastic! This is for 8-12 grade students. Students are allowed to stay after school and the computer lab will be open for those who would like to do homework. Please make sure students have/bring something to eat. The band does not provide dinners during basketball season. Students will be allowed to go to concessions at the 3rd quarter of the Varsity game.
  • Dec. 12th is our next game. 5:00 is call time
  • Dec. 14th will be our Alumni night. Call time 5:00 Alumni please meet in the band room @ 6:00
  • Senior night will be in second semester. TBA
Concert Band
  • Christmas Concert – Dec. 16th 7:00 7th, 8th, and High School
Winter Guard – New Program this year
  • Students will be practicing every Friday after school
  • Students will be learn the basics then after Christmas will learn a dance routine. Our goal is to perform at a few basketball games at half time.
  • Uniforms will be all black
  • We have 12 members
  • A trip to a competition in March @ Greenwood. We will be spectators this year.  More information TBA.
Winter Percussion – A New Program this year
  • Practices every Thursday
  • Competition in Avon in March - we will be spectators this year

  • If we don't go to competition, we'll try to perform at a basketball game or two.

Pit Band - A New Program this year
  • Pit Band was a huge success! Nobody can remember when the last time there was a pit band at B.C. for a musical.


We discussed on having a fundraiser every month so that we know when fundraisers are and which ones people would like to participate in. We greatly appreciate support and participation and hope you will choose to assist in the fundraiser(s) of your choice.  If you prefer, monetary donations would be accepted instead of participating in fundraisers.

Good afternoon,

I just wanted to remind everyone that the 8th grade & HS bands will be performing tomorrow during the school day so all students need to make sure they have concert dress clothes. They may wear themto school or bring them separately and change. If your 8th grade student is also in Choir, they may wear their Choir clothes to perform in. The Jr. High program is at 1PM, HS is at 2PM.

I hope all our band students had a chance to relax a little over Fall Break! As we get into this week, I wanted to thank all the parents for your support. This part of the year tends to go pretty fast so I want to get all pertinent information out there.

8th, HS
 - If your student is going to participate in Pep Band, I need their registration form back ASAP. I've attached a copy of it to this e-mail. There is also a $10 fee that covers their shirt. If that is an issue, just give me the form now and we'll worry about the $10 later. I printed off 80 of these forms (I ran out) and have only gotten about 35 of them back, so I know there are more out there. Pep Band is an awesome, low-pressure experience and I'd love to have everyone take part! Our first game is November 15th!

7th, 8th, HS
 - All fundraiser order forms are due back to me (no money, just forms) on November 4th. If you would just like to make a donation to the program without buying anything, that's fine. I usually have one person ask each year.

Pit Band members
 - The Pit for the musical will be rehearsing each day after school this week. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will go until 9PM (dinner provided), Wed & Thurs is until 5PM. We perform this weekend! Friday & Saturday at 7PM. All are invited to see BC's 2013 production of Brigadoon!

7th, 8th, HS
 - Our holiday concert is on Monday December 16th at 7PM. This concert is bands only and will feature the Jr./Sr. High ensembles.

Jazz Band members
 - We will be starting our Monday rehearsals next week - Nov. 4th. These are right after school and will go until 5:15PM. These are very important as they will prepare us for Purdue Jazz Festival.

Special Call-Out mentioned in school announcements:

The BC Band program is at it again! We are excited to announce the formation of the first ever Winter Guard ensemble. This has many of the same functions as the Color Guard in the fall but performs on its own to recorded music. Previous dance experience is helpful, but not essential. We will have auditions on Friday right after school. Meet in the band room. Please see Mr. Richardson in the band room with any questions.

Good Afternoon!  I want to thank  all of the parents for all the help with the fundraisers and especially the Chicken dinner.  We couldn't do it with out all of your support.  I know the beginning of the year is so busy with all the donations and fundraiser, we want  to thank you for all your patience.
I have  a survey question  for all band parents.   We are trying to  see how we can get more  parent participation at our parent meetings. If you have  a band student then you are  part of the band boosters.    Which day of the week do you think we can get more participation?
