Who am I?

My name is Bruno Baère, I'm a M.Sc. in Computer Science and B.Sc. in Computer Engineering graduate from PUC-Rio. I was born in April 16th 1986 in Resende, a city in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro state known for it's military academy (AMAN), but I didn't choose a military career. Instead, my passion for videogames drove me to Computer Engineering. Since I was 3 years old and was given a NES by my parents, I wanted to know how games were made and how I could make them. PUC-Rio offered me the opportunity to make games as class projects and meet others interested like me. I spent two years of Scientific Initiation researching game engines for Physics simulation and AI and took some Game Design classes from the Arts & Design Department, where I met some very creative people (and with whom I worked in some Projects and took part in the Gamerama collective).

My master's research about dynamic difficulty adaptivity in games was advised by professor Bruno Feijó from the ICAD/Visionlab at PUC-Rio. I'm also a participant of Gamerama, a game development collective of designers, programmers, and artists that get together to make games (computer and tabletop) and bring new people to this amazing world.

I have a minor in Math and I'm also interested in Physics Simulations, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Architecture, Philosophy and how games interact with culture and people (and vice versa). I believe that one who studies a subject must not narrow his/her vision to a single area but needs to broad his/her horizon, drinking from different sources and viewing from many perspectives as possible.

What am I doing?

Currently I'm a researcher and senior systems analyst at TeCGraf at PUC-Rio, working with V3O2 project, a seismic data visualizer and interpreter for Petrobrás. My activities as a senior systems analyst include understanding the client's needs and desires, design and implement systems that satisfy these needs and provide support. As a researcher, my activities include developing new technologies that improve and add value to the software, and sharing the resulting knowledge with fellow researchers.

I'm also a researcher at PUC-Rio's Arts & Design Deparment Game Design Research Group, under professor Maria da Graça Chagas's supervision. In this group, our main interests are artificial intelligence and its impacts in game design, emotion in games, and narrative in persistent virtual worlds.

There's more about me, including past work and other activities, at my LinkedIn page, or you can check my résumé above. For papers and conference presentations, you can find them on the navigation bar to the left or check my academic website.

What are my research interests?

My primary research interest are Games. As for my master's degree I researched dynamic adaptive difficulty in games and how it affected players' enjoyment of the game. I'm also interested in, but not limited to: other uses of artificial intelligence in games; player classification (or player types); procedural content generation; dungeon master-like systems (or dynamic quest generation systems).

As a researcher of PUC-Rio's Arts & Design Deparment Game Design Research Group, I'm interested in studying how artificial intelligence techniques influence and are influenced by game design, how to represent emotions in games and how to stimulate emotions in the player, and researching ways to improve narrative in persistent virtual worlds using artificial intelligence.
