Bay bridge inn san francisco : Bed and breakfast
365 Project Day 131: May 11, 2011 Another night at the ballpark, another shot having nothing to do with the game. I feel like everyone shoots the game, and I really don't have the lenses I'd want for the baseball action shots I'd like, so I opted to explore for some other subjects. While I was out waiting for a $9.50 beer during the 7th inning, I took a break to wander over to the outside wall. The park is in a beautiful location, especially for night photos, and I really wanted to capture some motion from the traffic and Muni trains. Unfortunately, I don't bring a tripod to the game, so I had to improvise a bit. This shot was a 15 second exposure, sort of handheld. Basically, I found a spot on the wall where I could balance the camera and apply a lot of pressure to keep stable. Honestly, I'm surprised how well they turned out. I had no expectation of getting this crisp of a shot here. The new east span tower for the Bay Bridge is visible rising behind Yerba Buena island in the background. I'll have to go out and take a closer look at that one of these days. Better big on black.
San Francisco Bay Bridge from Pier 30. On Saturday after sunset, the webcams showed that the Golden Gate was socked in. Like any fair weather Giants fan, I decided to stay in and watch the game on TV. Around the fifth inning they cut to a shot of low fog in front of Yerba Buena Island. I thought that was a rare sight and wondered whether to go shoot it. A bit later they showed fog entirely below the deck of the Bay Bridge, and I felt morally obligated to check it out, just in case. The fog stayed around for a while; sometimes you take one shot and the fog's gone or the view is socked in. This shot was the "punchiest" with the most stuff going on with the fog at once. I'm learning how to do HDRs on CS5. Until recently I was on CS2. I get better results -- after a lot more fiddling with settings. Before I was often forced to hand blend in some fixes and alternate versions. Now I'm tempted to skip that part, which may be good or bad. 70-200 @ 200mm, f/11, 1/250 to 30s, ISO 100; 30s ISO 400.
