The pumping stations got the names of famous hydraulic engineers: Leeghwater, Lijnden and Cruquius. The construction of the Leeghwater was started in 1845, the construction of the Lijnden and Cruquius began in 1847. For the design of buildings in the Gothic Revival style drew the Dutch public works engineer in January Anne Beijerinck (1800-1874), while the machines were designed by Joseph Gibbs and Arthur Dean of London. The steam engine itself was built by Harvey & Co. Hayle in Cornwall), the pumps by Fox & Co in Falmouth (Cornwall), and poor balance and steam boilers by Van Vlissingen & Dudok van Heel in Amsterdam.

These controls operate hydraulic pumps, which power the rams to turn the rudder (see next picture). There are two sets of controls, one for each rudder, and they can be cross-connected. Optimally, the controls are run electrically from the bridge, but if that fails, and the connection to the auxillary steering position fails, then the rudder can be manually controlled from here.
