Coir rope
Coir rope
Coir rope weaving is a small-scale industry in kerala. After the coconuts are separated from their thick outer husks, the husks are collected and left in water to soak. The rope-weavers make little floating islands of coconut husks in water, where the husk is left to rot. When we travel by train, the railway tracks criss-cross the backwaters where the coir weavers make their beaver mounds. The train passengers are accosted by the smell of H2S rising from these little rotting mounds of coconut fibre. I am not quite sure of the process after this. But the fibre is pulled out, dried, and woven, and made into several things including rope. And in the process, says a friend of mine who has seen it done, the people inhale the fibres floating in the air outside their homes and suffer from lung disease. They earn little and would like to do other things besides making rope. My friend said I was romanticising the rope makers. They live close to nature, make rope, suffer ill health and earn pennies, while the rich buy them to feel healthy and feel close to nature. Like all things involving the traditional use of coconut, these fibrous ropes too will disappear as poor people embrace global market values to make their lives better. These ropes are considered old-fashioned fiddly things, when there are other modern plastic rope conveniences available. It is a sign of the times, people consider it backward to use coir ropes when colourful plastic is available. I like to buy these ropes to hang my washing to dry in the sun. It is an ancient Kerala cottage industry, and in my romantic naivete, I would hate to see it disappear. But the rope weavers unlike me cannot afford to be romantic. Times will change, I just don't want it changing towards plastic. Lastly, whenever I look at these ropes, I am reminded of the robinson crusoe story. Of a castaway, weaving rope from the vines on his island, a romantic dream only a lonely city-dweller can come up with. The word coir is derived from the malayalam word for rope which is 'kayar'. The legendary Malayalam writer 'Thakazhi Sivashankara Pillai' wrote a novel called 'Kayar'. It was a fictionalised history of a family through several generations. They witness the breakdown of the old feudal system and the characters are forced to embrace change whether they want to or not.
