Built on the site of the Norman Cathedral this Georgian Building was erected in 1776 Jonathan Swift A Modest Proposal (1729) A Modest Proposal for preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the publick. It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads and cabin-doors crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags, and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbados. I think it is agreed by all parties, that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom, a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of making these children sound and useful members of the common-wealth, would deserve so well of the public, as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation. But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the children of professed beggars: it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a certain age, who are born of parents in effect as little able to support them, as those who demand our charity in the streets. As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of our projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in their computation. It is true, a child just dropped from its dam, may be supported by her milk, for a solar year, with little other nourishment: at most not above the value of two shillings, which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner, as, instead of being a charge upon their parents, or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall, on the contrary, contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing of many thousands. There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children, alas! too frequent among us, sacrificing the poor innocent babes, I doubt, more to avoid the expense than the shame, which would move tears and pity in the most savage and inhuman breast. The number of souls in this kingdom being usually reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couple, who are able to maintain their own children, (although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom) but this being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand breeders. I again subtract fifty thousand, for those women who miscarry, or whose children die by accident or disease within the year. There only remain an hundred and twenty thousand children of poor parents annually born. The question therefore is, How this number shall be reared, and provided for which, as I have already said, under the present situation of affairs, is utterly impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed. For we can neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture; we neither build houses, (I mean in the country) nor cultivate land: they can very seldom pick up a livelihood by stealing till they arrive at six years old; except where they are of cowardly parts, although I confess they learn the rudiments much earlier; during which time they can however be properly looked upon only as probationers: As I have been informed by a principal gentleman in the county of Cavan, who protested to me, that he never knew above one or two instances under the age of six, even in a part of the kingdom so renowned for the quickest proficiency in that art. I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old, is no saleable commodity, and even when they come to this age, they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half a crown at most, on the exchange; which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of nutriments and rags having been at least four times that value. I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection. I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healt

TAKE CARE: THIS PIC HAS ALMOST 4 YEARS, I CHANGED A LOT SINCE, THANKS TO CONSIDER IT, XD ;) The cute Rikku is my little sister... Tagged by Loren and Jadeness! :) The rules : if you're tagged, upload a photo saying you were tagged, put 10 random facts about yourself into the description, and tag 10 other people by adding them to the photo. 1- All what I have to say here is not really insteresting and most of my friends already know about it so...let's try anyway (see Loren, I do it in english) 2- My english is terrible.............and I'm sorry for that, hope you'll understand a little bit about me anyway ;) 3- I'm that you can call a housewife, first of all, I'm a mum, that the reason I chose this way of life for the few years to come. Sometimes, I can say that's difficult, I do not see a lot of people, we just moved in a new town where I do not know anyboby, my family and friends are far away from us and that's really difficult to meet people when you do not work outside :( That is one of the reason Internet is sometimes so great, I can feel more close of my friends (and even meet some new friends)... 4- Before being what I decided to be (see Point 3), I was a comic book seller, I'm completely crazy about this universe...I love american comic books but also japanese and french, I was working to Album, which is a famous french Comic Book Shop :) When, I'll go back to the "outside work", I don't think I'll do it again...first of all, since I stopped to work, my knowledges about this universe had became worse every day. I will have a lot to catch again. Then, even if it's a job I love, that doesn't pay so much and the schedule is not simple all the time (especially when your shop close every day at 10pm and when you need almost 2 hours to come back home)... All this to say that I'm just trying to prepare my come back to school cause I'd like to work with children like a pediatric nurse :) 5- I'm completely crazy about Dolls, toys and all what reminds me childhood...I do not really know why, maybe cause my childwood wasn't really nice...I'm now trying to catch up the "lost time" (Can I say it in english?!?) 6- I love old things. I mean everything (or almost) in my house has a story before "me", I do not like to buy new stuff (furniture, dishes, books, decoration....). That's the reason I love garage sell (and ebay....). I can find old and cheap stuff with a story I can feel or imagine, that's what I like when I put something "new" in my house. I do not prefer an era in particular, I love all stuff from the past, really old or not so much :) I'm found of decoration anyway (including gardening), I love using old items in an other way that the one they were made for (For exemple, I transformed an old bin and wine boxes in some flower window boxes...should make some pics...). 7- I lived 6 months in Laos and I dream about going there to definitelly install myself (with my family of course), that's a great country and my uncles live there with my aunts and cousins, miss them often but I love to go and see them for hollydays (it's a long time I didn't go to see them, I'm just pregnant and my son will be 2 years old this summer, we'll wait for them to be a little bit more old and bring them for hollydays...I really want to make them discovered this faboulus country before the big changes will have completely transformed it)...we provide our wedding out there with my love. 8- I'd love also to visit Japan but I suppose it's more about shopping than anything else ;) 9- There are a lot of things I'd like to learn about. I mean REALLY learn but I'm too lazy. I'd like to study japanese and Lao, I tried a lot of times but gave away everytime, I do not understand myself, I know that I want but the efforts affraid me so much. That's the same with cooking (but I'm best everyday....I have a family to feed, LOL), photography and sewing. That's so much time I want to learn about all this and if I did it in the good way, I'm sure I would be good now :( 10- My dream "job"?!? To be a writter (a comic book one?!? XD)....I love writing but I do not think my talents are good enough, I should work on it but just read the point 9 again ;) And of course, I wouldn't write in english, LOL, that would be an insult to this languange i'm just torturing right now ;) Hope you understood at least something of what I tried to say :) I just tag every person who will want to do this, so let's go, lazy people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
