The best of all things is to learn. Money may be lost or stolen, health and strength may fail; but what you have committed to your mind is yours forever.  Louis L'Amour in "The Walking Drum"
(This is my all-time best quote--It has been displayed, first in my classroom and then in my school library, for over 21 years.

You may go to France, but you will never become a Frenchman. You may go to Greece, but you will never become a Greek. You may go to China, but you will never become a Chinese, to Japan and never become a Japanese. But anyone can come to America and become an American. That is the greatness of this country we call the United States of America. Angie Papadakis (from Reader's Digest)
(This is my second all-time best quote. Think about this: when other countries' are on the news, they show their pride with their rulers and/or their military personnel and equipment marching by; in this country what you see in front of the White House & Capitol Building are crowds of people protesting. It is freedom that makes people want to come here to become Americans, and we are richer for it.)

Eleanor Roosevelt
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
(This quote changed my life.)

Gerald Ford, former U.S. President
A government that is big enough to give everything to you, is also big enough to take everything from you.

The strength of a nation is not in its ability to fight wars, but in its ability to prevent them.

Albert Einstein
Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

Martin Luther King, Jr
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

David Weiss
The 6 most important words are "I admit I made a mistake." The 5 most important words are "You did a good job." The 4 most important words are "What is your opinion?" The 3 most important words are "If you please." The 2 most important words are "Thank you." The least important word is "I."

Peter F Drucker
Efficiency is concerned with doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things.

Dr Frank Taylor, educator - quoted from Madeline Hunter
If students do not learn the way we teach them, we must teach them the way that they will learn.

Henry Ford
Whether you think you can or think you can't, you are right!

Confucius
Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Todd Finley
When people tell lies, activity in the amygdala decreases. In other words, when we tell a lie, our brain’s emotional response is reduced, making it easier to tell a bigger lie.

Anonymous educator, England, from "Empowering Students with Technology" by Alan November
We have succeeded in teaching our students how to be taught and what we need to do is to teach them how to learn.

Kids have a long attention span, but a low tolerance for boredom.

If you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off than if you had tried to do nothing and succeeded.

We have met the enemy...and he is us.

Don't know where these came from, but...
No person is completely worthless; at least they can serve as a pitiless example.

Take charge of your attitude. don't let someone else choose it for you.

Poignant view of days gone by...
A man called the Social Security office where I work and requested an estimate of his benefits upon retirement. After I gave him the information, he inquired about his wife's benefits. I asked if she had ever worked. "She has worked all her life making me happy," he replied. That was nice, I commented, but had she ever worked under Social Security? "No," he said. "We made an agreement when we got married. I would make the living and she would make the living worthwhile."

J.B.Yeats:
A man and woman should choose each other for life. A long life is barely enough for a man and woman to understand each other; and to understand is to love. The man who understands one woman is qualified to understand pretty well everything.

My quintessential story on giving customers what they want:
A leading architect once built a cluster of office buildings set in a central green. The landscape crew asked him where he wanted the sidewalks between the buildings. His reply:  "Just plant grass between the buildings."  By late summer the new lawn was laced with pathways of trodden grass. The paths followed the most efficient line between the points of connection, turned in easy curves rather than at right angles and were sized according to traffic flow. In the fall the architect simply paved in the pathways. Not only did the paths have a design beauty, but they responded directly to user needs.  Christopher Williams in Origins of Form

The problem with education:
There was a professor who went into a kindergarten class one day and asked students to raise their hands if they could dance. Of course they all raised their hands. Draw? Sing? Again, they all raised their hands. Then he went into a college class and asked the same questions of students there, and of course, no one raised their hands. He concluded that education is the process of teaching us what we can't do.
