Barry Barry Run - 13th June 2009

Barry Barry Run - 13th June 2009

Jason, Barry Bear and The Winner. Again

As with the inaugural event in 2008, the sun shone on the Barry Barry Runners

In the spring of 2008, mysterious messages started to appear on the East Dulwich Forum announcing, with a shade too much gusto, the first ever Barry Barry Run

What was it? Who were the mysterious "Help me Boab" and "Surf Bobby" who seemed to be behind the event? It was with no little trepidation that 14 brave men and 1 even-braver woman turned up at the Plough pub on the corner of Lordship Lane and Barry Rd in June 2008

No-one remembers much of what happened after that

Come April 2009, and once again the invites were issued (see below)

So 2009, saw official media descend on the area to document what will surely become a national news event in coming years

13 men were joined by 12 women this year and spectators were also significantly up on 2008.

As more people come forward with photo/video footage, this site will change...

The Invite

Now hear this, now here this far and wide. On the 13th day of the month of June, year of our lord 2009, a Great Race (or as the say in Edinburgh – A Barry Race) shall take place in the sleepy yet majestic town of East Dulwich. This is the 2nd year for the race, continuing on from last year’s success.

The race will consist of a flat foot race down the famous Barry Road, over a distance of 0.8 miles (according to Google). The starting point is The Plough pub at the top of Barry Road and the finishing point is The Clock House pub at the bottom of Barry Road (well you wouldn’t want to run uphill would you?).

I realise that at this stage, the race is sounding rather easy, however competitors are not allowed to commence running until one pint and one shot of the competitors choosing has been consumed as fast as possible. And of course the race is not complete until a second pint and second shot is consumed as fast as possible at the finishing pub. The winner will be the first one to down all their drinks and complete the course. No penalties are given for any stomach incidents during the race, if Paula Radcliff can take a toilet break on her race then we can certainly puke on ours.

For those unable to take part due to ill heath, pregnancy, gammy knees or sick notes from Mother, support teams are required to provide water, sponges, first aid, cigarettes, brandy and rescue transport.

Race attire is at the competitor’s digression but last years runners in the snazzy Jamaican vests set the bar pretty high. So to arms people, you have the information and invitation, please feel free to spread the word. Let the training commence.
