Crossbones graveyard
Crossbones graveyard
The Crossbones burial ground in Southwark, South London, was used between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries as a mass burial site for primarily porpers, prositutes and plague victims. The site has never been recognised or consecrated as a graveyard and since its closure in 1851 - due to reaching an unimaginable capacity - it has remained in limbo, unusable for development and unrecognised but for the attempts captured in these photographs. The campaigners make a pilgrimage to the gates every Haloween to leave asorted offerings and ribbons marking those whom they believe to be buried at Crossbones.
i always think of one of my favorite catpower songs and videos, 'in a crossbones style', with this picture.
