Freda said, "I need my pills." "Yes dear," said Johan. "Right away." And he left the room, rolling his eyes. The pills had become an issue in their marriage but he was loath to say so. In the bedroom he found her bag, rummaged for a few seconds and came up with two bottles - green pills and white pills. Back in the living room, Freda was on the couch, still in her pyjamas with a blanket on her lap. Books and magazines and plates and cutlery and wrinkled up Kleenexes sprawled out around her. She sat with her head in her hands, moaning. Johan watched her from the doorway for a second and tried to remember when it wasn't like this, when Freda was whole. "Here," he said, handing her the bottles. He'd long given up on asking, "Green or white?" Best to just hand them over, all at once, and leave it to her. "Thank you," she said, not looking at him. She twisted the caps off both bottles, took one in each hand and poured about a dozen pills together on the coffee table. She recapped the bottles and held them out to Johan who was waiting, hand outstretched. Freda scooped the pills off the table and put them in her kangaroo-pouch pocket. She shuffled them and then chose three with her fingers, put them in her mouth without looking at them. Johan said, "Are you okay now?" Which meant, "Can I go now?" "Oh yeah," Freda said. "I'm just gr-r-r-reat." Which meant, "I want you to stay here and fight with me." Johan took a deep breath. God only knew what she'd just swallowed. Two greens and a white? Two whites and a green? Three greens? Three whites? None of the prospects augered well. She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, lips clenched, arms crossed. He checked his watch and shook his head. How many more times could he do it? Whatever she'd taken, whatever particular drama would ensue, he knew from experience it would last at least an hour. Then she'd either nod off or take more pills and... around they'd go again. This was not the retirement he'd dreamed of. This was not the wife he'd spent all those years working with, planning with, achieving with; they'd worked so hard for an early retirement and now... this. "Well?" said Freda. "What are you doing?" Which meant, "Ready? Let's fight." She still didn't look at him, eyes on the ceiling, mouth in a tight straight line. What AM I doing? Johan wondered. He was still in his 50s, still full of life, but all he felt was exhausted. He wanted to say, "I'm going out." He wanted to say, "I'm going out and I'm not coming back." But he didn't. He stood there, looking at her, wondering where his wife had gone. He was still holding the bottles of pills. Smooth clear cylinders with chemicals inside. He didn't even hate them any more. He didn't have the strength. "I'm just going to put your pills away," he said. But instead he walked straight out the front door. Back in the house he could hear her yelling. He realized he still had the pills and for a moment he considered turning back. Then he thought, "Fuck 'er. Let her yell." And he just kept on walking. With each step her voice was fainter, and his heart was lighter. It was going to be okay.

All Ambient. Big long room, might be too much ceiling here but if I go any lower it's too low.. loads of light behind me - I just over exposed it. Easy. Actually a meeting / leisure room for a sweet apartment complex, really nice - they have a large "amoeba" shaped lake in the middle and prolly 7 fingers or "Ameoba-arms" on which all these nice town homes are built. does that lamp look out of place? Coffee table needs something and nice Fire Extinguisher!
