R.I.P. Pete van Heerden

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved friends of the Barleycorn and long-standing committee member (since 1989), Peter van Heerden, who passed away on 17 October from complications following surgery.

Pete was so passionate about local music with a huge kind and generous heart, and a killer sense of humour. He supported, encouraged and inspired so many young (and old) musicians to press on and pursue their dreams and (in Carlo's words) he lived life to the large and we dare say enjoyed it, always with a glilnt of good mischievous fun, he lived life large and we dare say enjoyed it, always with a glint of good mischievous fun in his eye!

He is also remembered for his huge depth of knowledge and wisdom, particularly in the musical world, and was always ready to share this and spread the musical love! Barleycorn will always endeavour to pass on this legacy and support musicians with the same gusto long into the future!

We have no doubt that wherever Pete is now, probably out on a river somewhere with a fishing rod in hand and some bluesy music playing in the background, that it's most definitely “cooking with gas!” (Pete's favourite expression).

We miss you Pete! Much love, the Barleycorn Committee

UPDATE - Pete's memorial will be held at Kelvin Grove, Claremont, on Friday 26 October 2018 at 10h30
