Whatever Happened To Billy Bignall

Whatever Happened to Billy Bignall

by Les Clarke

The play is set in a residential care home. The majority of the scenes take part in the Jasmine Lounge. This is the main lounge where the residents spend most of their communal time. Billy is forever telling his “showbiz stories” to anyone that will listen, but the general consensus of opinion, is that it’s all make-believe and no-one really believes that he “trod-the-boards” as he boasts he did. Enter Clive Banister the new manager, who has some revolutionary ideas that puts matron’s nose out of joint and causes disruption for all the other residents. One of his many ideas is to put on a variety show, for the residents, by the residents. This is met by profound disbelief by everyone, but Jack and Elsie see it as a way for Billy to prove that he really was an entertainer in the “good-old-days” but Billy refuses point-blank to take part.
