From This Hazy Malaise We Still Stand
This is the Hynite Fertilizer Plant of Oak Creek. Abandoned sometime between 1981 and 1983, this beautifully constructed piece of architecture now stands in ruin. The details behind this structure are rather obscure. I do know that there was a rather large chemical spill in this area shortly before it's closing. Whether or not that had anything to do with its downfall is yet to be found. On a side note: This photo was taken a little over a year ago. Since then, this building has gone through an accelerated state of decay. The stairs leading to the third floor are now rusted to the point that you can feel the surface area below your feet bend and bow with each step; the roof has started to fall in on itself (there are huge concrete slabs stuck and suspended in small window frames on the third floor (this area is not safe to play so to speak); and the weight of the building accompanied by decades of neglect is beginning to take a huge toll on the 2nd floor's structural integrity. It is my belief that this structure will be gone within the next couple months seeing as a demolition crew has made its way into the area and has already removed the surrounding abandonment in the area. It will only be a matter of time before this structure becomes only a memory for some. Also to Gov. Scott Walker, thanks for fucking this up. Original plans for this area were to accommodate the high speed rail system which would have connected Minneapolis, MN, Madison, WI, Milwaukee, WI, and Chicago, IL. But after inauguration Gov. Walker put the kabash on the plans in hopes to funnel the money into the pockets of his buddies who run the roadway construction companies. To make a long story short, the federal government denied Gov. Walker's request and gave the money to other states instead, while Wisconsin received nothing. To think of the number of jobs and easy travel we lost out on because of this "politics as usual" bullshit. And with gas prices going well over $4 a gallon, people should be sick over this, but of course he's selling the rhetoric and just enough people are buying. To that I say, "Fuck You Governor Walker. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Wisconsin, let's recall this son of a bitch in 2012. -End- Calumet 4x5 View Camera 135 mm Schneider Kreuznach F/ 8 Ilford 100 Delta B&W 4x5 Sheet Film Promaster Orange Contrast Filter I did develop this on my own and did a few darkroom prints (one of which now hangs on the wall), but all the tech data on it is buried in the archives. If you really want to know, shoot me a message and I'll dig it up. Peace out ya'll. Also, if you would like to use my photos for anything, please ask. I'm an easy going guy and am pretty open to allowing folks to use my photos for their own personal project and such. I only bring this up because I have been finding my photos are being plucked from this site and drug all over the internet without ever receiving any kind of heads up. I don't appreciate that. Sorry to sound like an ass, but it does take a lot of work to make these photos and a little consideration is all I ask. Thanks again.
Day 059 of 365
Day 059 of 365
We had an early Xmas this year. Since My Wife, Child, and I are going to my mothers house in Ohio for XMas, My In-laws wanted to have an early XMas while they were down here for Thanksgiving. At the same time, they thought it woudl be a great idea to do a whole set of family portraits while everyone was together. So guess who was told a few hours before we were set to leave that I was doing this. :D We got a lot of group shots of family members together, and then a couple of shots of the entire family. Do you know how hard it is to get almost 30 drunk people to get together and sit still for 5 seconds to take a damn photo? Jebus H!!! Now I know why people charge so much to do this shit. It isn't because of the price of the equipment. Or for their time. It is because they have to deal with people. I got one cousin with a dozen beers in him who keeps turning on the replay of the football game because he is sure that if they replay it enough 30 minutes after the game is ended they will reverse their decision and let his team win. As you can see from the reflection in my glasses. Fuck me people! Do you not understand how light travels? No The fucking TV wasn't in the shot... but the light from it was! It is a 60 inch HD TV.... You can turn off the rest of the lights in the house and still see everything if this thing is on. Then I have two dogs running around the damn room who think the only spot in a 3000 square foot home has to be directly between my camera and the people I am taking pictures of. I had to dump 2/3s of the shots because of these brown and black streaks running back and forth in front of a two second exposure. Speaking of.... lets not mention the blurs because these morons cant figure out that if they cant stay still for half a second (yea... that was the shutter speed for some of them) then the parts of their bodies that they move wont be all there when it is done. It is amazing how many Phantom Hands and rapidly spinning heads this family has. It must be a medical condition. I love the fact that my wife realized I wasn't into this. After having everything set up and then delaying everything for 2 hours while Tech with into quadruple overtime, she realized the natural light I was so badly wanting to use was gone. So I made do with a flash and whatever else I had on hand. She took over duties of organizing people. Getting them into frame. Educating her family on the fact that the 6 foot tall person should not be directly in front of the 5 foot 2 inch old lady. No matter how pretty he thinks he is. Ah well..... It's family right? You do it anyways. At least I got this semi-decent shot of my wife and I together. Thank some deity for timers again.
